When Grab wins
For straightforward trips to hotels within Kota Kinabalu city, Grab is the best option for most travelers. It is the cheapest, the price is shown before you book, and you do not need to interact with a coupon counter or carry local cash. The app is available in English and the drivers generally know where they are going.
Grab works well for trips up to about 30-40 km. Beyond that, drivers may decline the ride or you simply will not find availability.
When the coupon taxi works
If your phone is dead, you have no data, or you do not want to install another app, the coupon taxi is a reliable fallback. You pay at the counter, get a slip, and hand it to the driver. The price is fixed by zone, so there is no negotiation. It costs roughly double what Grab charges, but the process is simple.
When a private transfer is the right call
