Kota Kinabalu Airport with Kids — Family Transfer Guide

Last updated: April 2026

Kota Kinabalu is a popular gateway for family holidays in Malaysian Borneo — think island hopping, wildlife centers, and mountain views. The airport is small and manageable, but getting ground transport right matters when you have kids in tow.

Child car seat situation

Malaysian law requires child restraints for children in private vehicles, but enforcement varies. Here is the practical reality:

  • Grab cars do not carry child seats. You can request GrabFamily in some Malaysian cities, but this service is not consistently available in Kota Kinabalu.
  • Coupon taxis do not provide child seats.
  • Private transfers are the only reliable way to get a properly fitted child seat. Specify the age and weight of each child when booking.

Many families traveling in Southeast Asia bring their own lightweight car seats or boosters. If you plan to use Grab frequently during your trip, this is worth considering.

Strollers and luggage

BKI's terminals are single-level with trolleys available at baggage claim. The walk from arrivals to the Grab pickup or taxi rank is short and flat — manageable with a stroller.

Standard Grab cars and taxis can fit about two large suitcases in the boot. Add a stroller and it gets tight. For families with more luggage, request a Grab 6-Seater or book a minivan transfer (around MYR 80-120 / EUR 16-24).

The heat factor

Sabah is hot and humid year-round — typically 30-33 degrees Celsius with high humidity. The walk from the terminal to the pickup point is covered but brief exposure is enough to make young children uncomfortable. Having a vehicle ready and waiting (as with a pre-booked transfer) eliminates standing around in the heat.

If you are heading to a resort

Many families stay at resorts outside KK — Shangri-La Rasa Ria, Nexus, or places near Kundasang. These are 30 minutes to 2 hours away by car. For these trips, a pre-booked transfer is the only sensible option. The driver will have an appropriate vehicle, know the route, and you avoid the stress of arranging transport on arrival.

Tips for families

  • Download Grab before you land. The airport WiFi works, but it is faster if the app is ready.
  • Bring snacks for the car. Airport food options are limited, and young children get hungry quickly.
  • Request child seats at booking time. Do not assume they will be available on the spot.
  • Carry a lightweight stroller if you plan to explore. Full-size prams are impractical in KK's streets and markets.
