For Malaga city, the train makes both taxis and transfers largely redundant — a standard Cercanías fare against an airport taxi minimum of 18,24 EUR. For the Costa del Sol and inland destinations, the choice between a metered taxi and a pre-booked transfer is more relevant, and more expensive than most people expect.
Taxis at Malaga Airport
Taxis queue outside the arrivals exits in T2/T3. They are metered, Andalucía-regulated, and generally reliable. Drivers at Malaga Airport are experienced with tourist routes. The airport supplement is fixed and clearly displayed.
Two tariffs apply. Into Malaga city there is an airport minimum fare of 18,24 EUR on weekdays between 06:00 and 22:00, 22,48 EUR evenings, weekends and holidays, and 25,80 EUR late at night (Junta de Andalucía resolution, February 2026), and the 11 km run comes in under the meter, so you pay the minimum. Everywhere else runs on the Andalusian interurban tariff, which charges the journey as a closed circuit back to the start — you pay for the driver's empty return too.

For short journeys (Torremolinos, Benalmádena, Fuengirola), taxis are straightforward and well-priced. For longer journeys the return-leg rule makes them expensive, and route choice around the AP-7 toll adds more variability. Clarify before departure whether the toll route will be used.
The taxi queue at Malaga is normally manageable, even in summer. The airport is large enough to maintain an adequate taxi supply. Waits of more than 20 minutes during busy periods are unusual.

Taxi: Short to medium-distance routes (Torremolinos, Fuengirola, Malaga city) where the queue is short and the metered fare is not substantially variable. Good for solo travellers and couples.
Private transfer: Long-distance journeys where a fixed price matters (Marbella, Nerja, Granada, Ronda). Families needing child seats. Groups of three or more where meeting a driver inside is more convenient than the rank. Anyone who wants to be met inside after a long flight.
Train: Honestly, for Malaga city the train beats both options for price and speed — a standard Cercanías fare against an 18,24 EUR taxi minimum. It runs every 20 minutes from inside the terminal.
The Granada or Ronda argument
For the longer inland routes, a pre-booked transfer makes particular sense. The official taxi guideline to Granada is EUR 192 on a weekday and EUR 219 at nights and weekends; to Ronda it is EUR 149 and EUR 170. Those are high because the interurban tariff bills the driver's return leg, and a fixed quote does not have to. For Ronda specifically, the mountain road (A-367) has sections that are slower than expected — a fixed fare eliminates the anxiety of watching the meter on a winding descent.
