Pisa Airport is uniquely positioned: right next to Pisa but used by many travellers heading to Florence, 80 km away. The cost depends entirely on your destination.
To Pisa city centre
| Transport | Price | Time |
|---|---|---|
| LAM Rossa bus | EUR 1.70 in advance / EUR 3.00 onboard | 10 min |
| PisaMover to Pisa Centrale | EUR 6.50 | 5 min |
| Taxi to Pisa Centrale | EUR 10.60 (predetermined fare) | 5-10 min |
| Taxi to Piazza Duomo/Manin | EUR 14.20 (predetermined fare) | 5-10 min |
| Pre-booked transfer | EUR 15-30 | 5-10 min |
The taxi figures are the fares the Comune di Pisa has set for those airport runs (tariff in force since 1 February 2023); the bus fare is the standard Autolinee Toscane urban ticket. All of these are revised from time to time, so check the operator before you travel.
For Pisa, public transport is so cheap and convenient that private transport is only justified with specific needs. The bus at EUR 1.70 is the best value for solo travellers.
To Florence
| Transport | Price (per person) | Time |
|---|---|---|
| PisaMover + train (regionale) | EUR 6.50 + the regional fare | 70-90 min total |
| PisaMover + train (Freccia) | EUR 6.50 + the Freccia fare | 55-70 min total |
| Pre-booked transfer (per car) | EUR 100-160 | 60-90 min |
| Taxi | No fixed fare - metered | 60-90 min |
Train fares are set on the Tuscany regional tariff (regionale) or vary with demand (Freccia), so check the current fare on trenitalia.com rather than relying on a figure quoted here. Florence is outside the Pisa comune, so a taxi is metered on the extra-urban rate of EUR 2.30 per km on top of the EUR 3.80 opening charge -- over 80 km the meter alone runs well past EUR 180 before extras.
The train is the clear budget winner for individuals and couples. The transfer wins on convenience for families, groups, and late arrivals.
To other Tuscan destinations
| Destination | Distance | Train route | Transfer (approx.) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lucca | 25 km | Via Pisa Centrale | EUR 40-60 |
| Livorno | 20 km | Via Pisa Centrale | EUR 35-55 |
| Siena | 120 km | Via Florence | EUR 120-170 |
| San Gimignano | 80 km | No direct train | EUR 100-150 |
| Volterra | 75 km | No direct train | EUR 90-140 |
| Chianti area | 90 km | No direct train | EUR 110-160 |
For destinations without direct rail connections, a transfer or rental car is the only practical option.
Group cost comparison (to Florence)
The train is priced per person, so its total scales with the size of your party; a transfer is priced per car, so the same EUR 100-160 covers everyone in it.
For 1 person:
- Train: PisaMover EUR 6.50 + one regional fare
- Transfer: EUR 100-160 (all for one person)
For 2 people:
- Train: two PisaMover tickets + two regional fares
- Transfer: EUR 100-160 total (EUR 50-80 each)
For 4 people:
- Train: four PisaMover tickets + four regional fares
- Transfer: EUR 100-160 total (EUR 25-40 each)
Look up the current regional fare on trenitalia.com and multiply it out for your party -- that is the honest comparison, and by the time a group reaches four the per-person gap narrows considerably, with the added benefit of door-to-door service and no luggage juggling.
Hidden costs and tips
- The PisaMover costs EUR 6.50 on top of your train ticket. This is sometimes forgotten when comparing prices.
- Regionale trains to Florence are cheapest but slower and can be crowded. They do not require seat reservations.
- Freccia (fast) trains cost more but are quicker and more comfortable. They require seat reservations.
- Florence has a restricted traffic zone (ZTL) in the centre. If renting a car, you may face fines for driving in it. Transfers and taxis navigate this for you.
- There are no motorway tolls between Pisa and Florence on the FI-PI-LI road (a free expressway). This keeps taxi and transfer costs lower than distances might suggest.
- Italian train tickets for regionale services must be validated (stamped) before boarding. Failure to do so can result in a fine.
