Pisa Airport handles budget flights from across Europe, some of which arrive in the late evening. If your plane lands between 10 PM and early morning, here is what to expect.
The terminal after hours
The terminal is small and empties quickly after the last arrivals. Immigration for non-Schengen flights operates normally. Baggage claim is fast since the airport handles smaller aircraft.
The arrivals area is modest. The cafe and shops close by 9-10 PM. There are no 24-hour food options. The terminal is not designed for overnight stays and becomes very quiet after the last flights.
Free Wi-Fi is available.
Getting to Pisa at night
Pisa city centre is only 2 km away, which makes late arrivals far less stressful than at most airports.
Taxis are available at the rank outside, though the number of cars decreases later in the evening. The fare to Pisa centre remains EUR 10-15. Even at midnight, you will be at your hotel in under 10 minutes.
The PisaMover runs until approximately 12:30 AM. If your flight lands before midnight, you can likely still catch it to Pisa Centrale station. After it stops, a taxi is the straightforward alternative.
The LAM Rossa bus to Pisa Centrale has limited late-night service. Do not rely on it after 10 PM.
Getting to Florence at night
This is where late arrivals become more complicated. The last trains from Pisa Centrale to Florence typically depart around 9-10 PM, with very limited options after that.
If your flight lands after 9 PM and you need to reach Florence, your realistic options are:
A pre-booked transfer directly from the airport to your Florence hotel. The 80 km drive takes about 60-70 minutes at night with no traffic. This is the most reliable option. Prices range from EUR 100-160 for a sedan.
A taxi to Florence at night will cost EUR 120-180. You may need to negotiate or wait for a driver willing to make the journey at that hour.
Stay in Pisa overnight and take the first morning train to Florence. There are hotels near the airport and in Pisa centre (a very short ride away). The first trains to Florence start around 5-6 AM.
Practical tips
- If your flight is scheduled to arrive after 8 PM and you are heading to Florence, book a transfer in advance. The train timing leaves very little margin for delays.
- Pisa is a safe, quiet city at night. Even arriving at midnight, a taxi to your hotel is uneventful.
- ATMs are available in the arrivals hall. Have some cash for the taxi if needed.
- The airport area is on the edge of the city. There is not much within walking distance at night, but Pisa centre is genuinely close.
- If no taxi is at the rank, there should be a phone number posted. Alternatively, your hotel may arrange a pickup.
