Kaunas Airport to City Center: What You Actually Need to Know

Kaunas Airport is one of the closest airports to its city in Europe — just 14 km north of the Old Town, about a 15-20 minute drive. The city bus is far and away the cheapest way in; Bolt quotes you a price in the app; a pre-booked transfer is fixed when you book. Kaunas changed its public transport fares at the start of 2026, so check the current one with the operator (kvt.lt) or in the Žiogas ticket app before you rely on a figure. The airport is small, used heavily by Ryanair and Wizzair, and gets busy in bursts when budget flights land. Between those bursts, it can feel almost empty.

Most travelers heading to Kaunas center will find this an easy airport to deal with. If you are continuing to Vilnius (about 100 km away), that is a different trip and costs significantly more.

Kaunas airport has a single small terminal. After you step off the plane (often via stairs on the tarmac, not a jet bridge), you walk into the arrivals area. Passport control applies only if you are arriving from outside the Schengen zone; most European flights skip it entirely.

Baggage claim is a small hall with one or two carousels. Wait times are usually short — 10-20 minutes. Once you grab your bags, the exit leads you into a compact arrivals hall with a few car rental desks and an ATM.

Outside, you will find a bus stop, a small parking lot, and usually a handful of taxis. The airport has free Wi-Fi, which works reasonably well for booking a ride or checking directions.

City bus (route 29G or airport express): A direct bus runs from the airport to Kaunas city center. It is comfortably the cheapest option. Buying through the Žiogas ticket app or on a Kaunas transport card is cheaper than buying a paper ticket from the driver, and Kaunas revised its fares at the start of 2026 — check the current price at kvt.lt or in the Žiogas app rather than trusting an older figure. Buses run roughly every 20-40 minutes during the day but are less frequent in the evening. The ride takes about 30-40 minutes to the center depending on stops.

Taxi: Taxis wait outside arrivals, though not always in large numbers. Bolt is the dominant ride-hailing app in Lithuania and works well at Kaunas airport. Bolt shows you a fixed price before you confirm, which is the number to go on — it moves with demand, so there is no published rate to quote.

Pre-booked transfer: A driver meets you inside or just outside arrivals with a name sign, at a price fixed when you book. The main advantage is certainty — no waiting for a bus, no checking app availability, especially useful for early morning or late-night flights.

Car rental: Several rental companies operate from the airport. If you plan to explore Lithuania beyond Kaunas, this can make sense, but for just getting to the city it is overkill.

Transfer to Vilnius: If Kaunas airport is your gateway to Vilnius, a direct transfer is a much bigger job — 100 km — and is priced accordingly when you book. There are also bus services (FlixBus, Kautra) from Kaunas to Vilnius at a fraction of the cost, but they depart from the city bus station, not the airport, so you have to get there first.

Lithuania uses the euro, so no currency conversion needed for eurozone travelers.

Kaunas is not a mass-tourism destination and road fares do not spike dramatically by season, but they do move with demand at any given moment, which is why the app quote is the number that counts.

Kaunas airport receives budget flights that land late — sometimes past 23:00. At those hours, the bus service has stopped. Taxis may or may not be waiting outside; it depends on whether drivers know a flight is arriving.

Bolt is your best bet for a late-night ride, but driver availability can be thin after midnight. A pre-booked transfer eliminates this uncertainty entirely — your driver will be there regardless of the hour.

The airport is flat, compact, and easy to navigate with a stroller or heavy bags. The bus is possible with luggage but not comfortable — it is a city bus, not an airport shuttle, so there is limited storage space.

Choose a pre-booked transfer if: you are arriving late at night, have a family, want someone waiting for you by name, or are continuing to Vilnius and want the whole trip sorted before you land.
