Kaunas is a small airport with limited transport options, which makes this comparison simpler than at bigger hubs. Here is how the two options actually stack up.
Taking a taxi or Bolt
Bolt is the main ride-hailing app in Lithuania and is the easiest way to get a car at Kaunas airport. You open the app, enter your destination, see the price, and confirm. Typical fare: 15-25 EUR to central Kaunas. Cars usually arrive within 5-10 minutes during the day.
Traditional taxis sometimes wait outside arrivals, but not always. When a budget flight lands and 150 passengers walk out at once, there might be 3 taxis for all of them. This is a small airport — the taxi supply is not always matched to demand.
Bolt is card-friendly and transparent on pricing. The main downside is availability: after 23:00, fewer drivers are active, and during peak landing times, surge pricing may kick in.
Booking a private transfer
A pre-booked transfer means a driver is already at the airport when you land. They track your flight, wait if it is delayed, and meet you with a name sign. The car is reserved for you — no competition with other passengers, no surge pricing.
Prices are typically 20-35 EUR for a sedan, which is 5-10 EUR more than a standard Bolt ride. For a minivan or larger vehicle, 30-45 EUR.
Where the transfer wins
Late-night flights. Kaunas gets Ryanair and Wizzair flights that land at 23:00 or later. At those hours, finding a Bolt can take 15-20 minutes or more. A transfer driver is already there.
Continuing to Vilnius. If you need to get to Vilnius (100 km away), a pre-booked transfer for the full journey is more practical than cobbling together a Bolt to the bus station and then a bus to Vilnius.
Families with car seats. Bolt does not offer child seat options in Lithuania. Transfers do, when requested in advance.
Groups. If you are 4 or more people, a single minivan transfer is cheaper and more convenient than two separate Bolt rides.
Where the taxi/Bolt wins
Solo daytime travel. If you land during the day with a small bag, Bolt is quick, cheap, and easy. The price difference does not justify a transfer for a simple solo trip.
Spontaneity. If your plans are flexible and you might not even go to central Kaunas, an on-demand ride gives you more flexibility.
The practical verdict
For most daytime arrivals to Kaunas, Bolt is perfectly fine. For late nights, families, groups, or Vilnius-bound travelers, a pre-booked transfer saves you from the uncertainty of a small airport with limited taxi supply.
