Getting from Kaunas Airport to the City with Kids

Kaunas airport is about as family-friendly as a small airport can be. Short distances, no complicated terminals, and a quick ride into town. Here is what to know.

The airport experience with children

The terminal is compact. From the plane to the exit, you are looking at a short walk — often across the tarmac and through a small building. No long corridors, no shuttle trains, no confusion. With a stroller and tired kids, this is a relief.

Baggage claim is quick. One or two carousels, and bags usually appear within 15-20 minutes. Trolleys are available. Restrooms exist but are basic.

There is no dedicated play area or family lounge. If you need to feed or change a child, the facilities are minimal. Plan to get through the airport and into your car quickly rather than spending time inside.

Child seats

Lithuanian law requires appropriate child restraints for children under 135 cm tall. This is enforced and important.

Bolt does not offer child seat options. Taxis at the airport will not have them. If your children need car seats, a pre-booked transfer with child seats requested in advance is the only reliable option at Kaunas airport.

When booking, provide the ages and weights of your children so the correct type of seat (infant, toddler, booster) is prepared. Do this at the time of booking, not as a last-minute request.

Luggage considerations

Families on budget airlines often have a mix of cabin bags, checked bags, strollers, and sometimes car seats brought from home. A standard sedan can handle 2 large suitcases and a couple of cabin bags. If you have more than that — and most families do — book a minivan transfer.

The bus to the city (route 29G) is technically possible with luggage, but it is a regular city bus with no dedicated luggage storage. Maneuvering a stroller, bags, and children on a city bus after a flight is not a pleasant experience.

The ride to town

The drive from the airport to central Kaunas takes 15-20 minutes. Roads are good and well-maintained. The route is straightforward — mainly highway and then city streets. Kids who are going to sleep in the car will not have time to fully doze off, so do not count on it for nap management.

If you are heading to Vilnius

Some families fly into Kaunas because of cheaper flights but are actually staying in Vilnius. That is a 100 km drive, about 1 hour 15 minutes. If you have kids and luggage, a direct private transfer from the airport to Vilnius is far easier than trying to get to Kaunas bus station and taking a bus. It costs more (60-100 EUR), but with children the convenience is worth it.

Summary for families

Book a transfer with child seats. Request a minivan if you have heavy luggage. The airport is easy to navigate, the ride is short, and the only thing that requires advance planning is the car seat situation. Get that sorted before you fly and the rest is simple.
