Late arrivals at Dortmund need a plan, because the airport's pages publish little about night services.
What the airport publishes
The airport's bus and train page lists the airport express bus to Dortmund Hauptbahnhof and the airport shuttle bus to Bahnhof Holzwickede, and it lists local lines 490, 440 and 57. It gives no operating hours, frequencies or last departures. The taxi page does not publish taxi operating hours either.

What is not published
We found no official night timetable for the buses, so this guide does not say when the last bus leaves the airport or whether any bus runs after a late landing. We also found no statement on how many taxis wait at night. Do not assume that a bus or a taxi will be available after a late landing. Check the current timetable on the airport's website for your date. The airport page also refers to bahn.de, vrr.de and bus-und-bahn.de for further information.
Taxis at night
The taxi rank is at the arrivals level, next to the east exit. The airport page notes that between 22:00 and 06:00, and on Sundays and public holidays, the fare for trips within Dortmund, to Unna and to Holzwickede rises by about 10%. Its sample fares, marked approximate, as of February 2024 and without guarantee, include about 11 EUR to Holzwickede, about 21 EUR to Unna and about 35 EUR to Dortmund Hbf. Add the supplement for a night trip and confirm the fare with the driver before you set off.
Buses and tickets
The airport express bus and the airport shuttle bus are not part of the VRR tariff, so you need a separate ticket. If you arrive at night and want to rely on a bus, check first that one runs on your date.
Pre-booked transfers
A pre-booked transfer is arranged before you fly. Give your flight number and address at booking, and check your booking confirmation for where to meet and how delays are handled. If meet-and-greet is included in your booking, the driver meets you as stated there. The live price to Essen is from EUR 119. Use the quote tool on this page for other destinations.
The bottom line
At night, choose the arrangement you confirmed in advance over one you hope will be available. Keep your phone charged and your address saved.
