The train is faster, cheaper, and more reliable. It loses only on door-to-door convenience — you arrive at Sapporo Station and need to take the subway or walk to your hotel.
When a taxi or transfer beats the train
- Late-night arrivals after the last train (~10:53 PM)
- Heavy luggage that makes train travel impractical (4+ large bags)
- Families with small children during crowded peak seasons
- Hotels far from Sapporo Station where the subway connection adds complexity
- Niseko, Furano, or other non-Sapporo destinations not on the JR line

Japanese taxis are exceptionally clean, well-maintained, and honest — there is no scam risk. Drivers are professional and courteous. The main downside is the cost for the 50 km trip and the fact that most drivers speak little English.
A private transfer offers a fixed price and a driver who may speak more English. For groups it can work out cheaper than two taxis — get a quote for your party size and compare.
The Niseko exception
If you are heading to Niseko, the train is not practical. Your real options are the seasonal bus (ski season only) or a private transfer, which delivers you directly to your resort. Both quote a price when you book. During peak ski season, book early — Niseko transfers fill up fast.
