Arriving at New Chitose Airport Late at Night

Last updated: March 2026

New Chitose Airport handles domestic and international flights that arrive late in the evening. The key time to know is 10:53 PM — that is approximately when the last JR Rapid Airport train departs for Sapporo. Miss it, and your options change significantly.

What is available after the last train

| Option | Availability | Cost to Sapporo | Notes | |--------|-------------|----------------|-------| | JR Rapid Airport | Until ~10:53 PM | JPY 1,150 (EUR 7) | Last departure varies slightly by date | | Airport bus | Until ~9:30–10 PM | JPY 1,100 (EUR 6.50) | Ends earlier than the train | | Taxi | 24 hours | JPY 14,000–18,000 (EUR 85–110) | Always available at the rank | | Pre-booked transfer | 24 hours | JPY 10,000–20,000 (EUR 60–120) | Driver waiting, fixed price | | Airport hotel | 24 hours | JPY 4,000–10,000 (EUR 24–60) | Stay and catch the first morning train |

The airport bus stops running before the last train, so the train is your final public transport option. After that, it is taxi, transfer, or sleep.

The airport hotel option

New Chitose Airport has the Terminal Hotel directly inside the terminal building. Options include private rooms and capsule-style pods starting from about JPY 4,000 (EUR 24). This is a genuinely smart option if:

  • Your flight lands after 10 PM and the taxi fare seems excessive
  • You need to catch an early morning connection
  • You want to rest properly before starting your Hokkaido trip
The first morning train departs around 6:30 AM — you can sleep, wake up fresh, and be in Sapporo by 7:10 AM for roughly JPY 5,000–7,000 total (hotel + train) instead of JPY 14,000–18,000 for a late-night taxi.

Taxi at night

Japanese taxis operate 24 hours and the airport rank is always staffed for arriving flights. Late-night taxi fares are metered and may include a 20% surcharge between 10 PM and 5 AM, pushing the Sapporo fare to JPY 16,000–20,000 (EUR 97–120).

The ride to Sapporo takes about 50–60 minutes at night with empty roads — faster than during the day.

Pre-booked transfer at night

A private transfer at JPY 10,000–20,000 (EUR 60–120) may offer better value than a late-night taxi, especially for groups. The driver monitors your flight and waits at arrivals with a name board. Night surcharges are typically smaller than for taxis, or already included in the quoted price.

Practical tips

  • Check the exact last train time for your travel date — it varies slightly on weekends and holidays
  • If your flight lands before 10 PM but immigration takes 30+ minutes (common for international flights), you may still miss the last train — have a backup plan
  • The airport terminal remains open for overnight stays in the hotel, but most shops and restaurants close by 9–10 PM
  • 7-Eleven inside the terminal stays open late and has food, drinks, and ATMs
  • If heading to Niseko after a late arrival, stay at the airport hotel and take the morning bus — driving mountain roads at night in winter is not advisable
