New Chitose Airport is about 50 km from Sapporo, but excellent rail connections keep the cost low. Here is what every option actually costs.
Sapporo city center
| Transport | Cost (JPY) | Cost (EUR) | Duration | Notes | |-----------|-----------|------------|----------|-------| | JR Rapid Airport (unreserved) | 1,150 | 7 | 37 min | Best value, every 15 min | | JR Rapid Airport (reserved) | 1,680 | 10 | 37 min | Same train, guaranteed seat | | Airport bus | 1,100 | 6.50 | 70–80 min | Stops at major hotels | | Taxi | 14,000–18,000 | 85–110 | 50–70 min | Metered, highway tolls may apply | | Private transfer (sedan) | 10,000–15,000 | 60–90 | 50–60 min | Fixed price, door-to-door | | Private transfer (minivan) | 15,000–20,000 | 90–120 | 50–60 min | Families, groups |
The JR train dominates on price-to-speed ratio. At JPY 1,150 for 37 minutes, it is faster than driving and costs a fraction of a taxi. If you hold a Japan Rail Pass, the ride is included at no extra charge.

Saving money
- Japan Rail Pass covers the JR Rapid Airport train — if you have one, this ride is free
- IC cards (Suica, Kitaca) work on the train and throughout Sapporo's subway — load one at the airport
- The airport bus and JR train cost nearly the same, but the train is 40 minutes faster
- For groups of 3–4, a private transfer at JPY 10,000–15,000 splits to JPY 2,500–5,000 per person — close to the train price with door-to-door convenience
Currency tips
Japan is still partly a cash society. Withdraw yen from the 7-Bank ATMs in the airport 7-Eleven — they reliably accept international cards. Have at least JPY 5,000–10,000 in cash for your first day.
