Bologna Airport Transfers: What You Actually Need to Know

Bologna Guglielmo Marconi Airport (BLQ) is about 6 km northwest of Bologna city center. The Marconi Express monorail connects the airport to Bologna Centrale station in 7 minutes for EUR 12.80 one-way. Taxis take 15-25 minutes and are metered, with a EUR 12.80 minimum departure charge from the airport. For most travelers, the Marconi Express is the fastest and cheapest option. If you have heavy luggage, a group, or are heading somewhere other than the center, a taxi or pre-booked transfer makes sense.

BLQ has a single terminal. It handles a mix of scheduled carriers and low-cost airlines (Ryanair and others). After landing, you walk to immigration (for non-Schengen arrivals) or straight to baggage claim. The terminal is modern and well-signed.

Baggage claim has multiple carousels. Wait times vary — 10-25 minutes is typical. Once through, you enter the arrivals hall where you will find ATMs, a few shops, and car rental desks.

Wi-Fi is free at the airport. Italian SIM cards can be purchased at shops in the terminal if needed, though most European visitors have roaming. The airport is compact and easy to navigate — you will not get lost.

Marconi Express (monorail): This is the standout option. The automated monorail runs every 7-10 minutes and connects the airport directly to Bologna Centrale railway station. The ride takes 7 minutes. A ticket costs EUR 12.80 one-way or EUR 23.30 return (Marconi Express published fares). From Centrale, you can walk to many hotels in the historic center (10-15 minutes) or take a local bus or taxi for the last leg. The Marconi Express runs from approximately 05:40 to midnight.

Taxis: Licensed white taxis queue outside the arrivals exit. There is no flat airport-to-centre fare — the meter runs on the Bologna municipal tariff, which sets a minimum departure charge of EUR 12.80 from the airport (covering the first 6 km travelled above 20 km/h), then EUR 1.45 per km in the urban area, plus EUR 0.49 per minute whenever the car is stopped or crawling below 20 km/h (Comune di Bologna, tariffs in force since 1 January 2025). Luggage is EUR 0.60 per case, and the airport toll is paid by the passenger. Since the centre is about 6 km away, a daytime run lands close to that minimum once luggage is added, and climbs with time spent in traffic. The ride takes 15-25 minutes. Taxis can take you directly to your hotel, which is the key advantage over the monorail.

Pre-booked private transfer: A sedan transfer to central Bologna typically costs EUR 35-60. The driver meets you at arrivals with a name sign. This is useful for groups, families with lots of luggage, or if you are heading to a destination outside Bologna (like Modena, Ferrara, or the hills).

Buses: The BLQ Aerobus that used to link the airport with Bologna Centrale was withdrawn on 18 November 2020, when the Marconi Express opened — do not plan around it. The airport is served by TPER city buses: line 54, and the Q shuttle to Ospedale Maggiore, which extends to Bologna Centrale on its earliest and latest runs only. Check TPER for current routes and fares. For the centre, the Marconi Express is the direct link.

Rental cars: Available from major companies in the terminal. Bologna is at the crossroads of Italian motorways, making it a convenient base for driving in Emilia-Romagna. However, driving in Bologna's ZTL (limited traffic zone) center requires care — you can get fined for entering restricted areas without authorization.

Ride-hailing: Uber operates in Bologna with limited availability. Traditional taxis are more reliable. FreeNow (formerly mytaxi) works better for app-based booking.

Bologna is mid-range by Italian standards. Here is what the published fares and tariffs give from BLQ:

• Marconi Express to Centrale: EUR 12.80 one-way, EUR 23.30 return
• Taxi to city center: metered, starting from the EUR 12.80 minimum departure charge that applies to any run from the airport
• Taxi to Bologna Fiere (exhibition center): metered — the same EUR 12.80 airport minimum applies, so a shorter hop does not cost less than that

• Pre-booked transfer to Modena: EUR 80-130
• Pre-booked transfer to Ferrara: EUR 100-160
• Pre-booked transfer to Florence: EUR 200-300

Taxi supplements under the municipal tariff: EUR 0.60 per suitcase, EUR 2.20 on Sundays and holidays, EUR 3.15 at night (22:00-06:00), and EUR 1.15 per person from the fifth passenger. Airport and motorway tolls are paid by the passenger. The tariff is revised, so check the current one before you travel.

The Marconi Express stops running around midnight. If your flight lands after that, your options are taxis or a pre-booked transfer. Taxis are available at the rank outside arrivals, though the queue is shorter late at night and you may wait a few minutes.

The airport itself stays open as long as flights are operating. There are late arrivals from European cities, especially budget carriers with evening schedules.

If you arrive after midnight and the taxi queue is empty, there is a phone at the taxi rank to call for one. Alternatively, use FreeNow or similar apps. A pre-booked transfer removes the uncertainty entirely.

The Marconi Express is accessible and has luggage space, but with strollers, multiple bags, and children, it requires some maneuvering. You also need to manage the last leg from Centrale to your hotel.

For families, a taxi directly to the hotel is often the better choice. It costs a bit more than the monorail but eliminates the transfer at Centrale. If you need a child seat, pre-book a transfer and request one — standard Italian taxis do not carry child seats.

The airport terminal is fully accessible with elevators and ramps. Trolleys are available in the baggage claim area.

Taxis line up directly outside the arrivals exit in a well-organized queue. Follow the signs to the taxi rank.

Pre-booked transfer drivers wait in the arrivals hall, usually near the exit doors, holding a name sign. The terminal is compact, so you will spot them easily.

The Marconi Express station is connected to the terminal via a covered walkway. Follow the signs — it is well-marked and about a 3-minute walk from the arrivals area.

Take the Marconi Express if: you are heading to Bologna Centrale or the city center, traveling light, and want the fastest option. It is efficient and modern.

Take a taxi if: you want door-to-door service, have luggage, are traveling with children, or your hotel is not near Centrale.

Book a private transfer if: you need a child seat, are heading outside Bologna (Modena, Ferrara, Imola), traveling as a group, or arriving after midnight.

If the Marconi Express is not running (it stops around midnight), a taxi or pre-booked transfer is the option — there is no longer an airport bus to Centrale.
