Getting from Bastia Poretta Airport to Bastia

Bastia Poretta (BIA) sits in the Marana plain 20 km south of Bastia. Getting into Bastia takes 25-35 minutes. The STIB navette bus to Bastia runs €10 one way and takes about 30 minutes — but the schedule matches only some flights. A taxi to Bastia runs on the metered tariff set each year by prefectural order for Haute-Corse, with a higher rate at night, on Sundays and on holidays — confirm the price with the driver before you set off. Uber and Bolt do not operate in Corsica — do not plan on them. A pre-booked transfer runs €50-75 for a sedan. Renting a car at BIA is the default choice for most travelers because Corsica's public transport outside cities is thin, and once you leave Bastia you will want wheels.

Bastia Poretta is Corsica's second airport (after Ajaccio), busy mainly in summer with flights from Paris, Nice, Marseille, Lyon, and seasonal routes from the UK, Germany, Belgium, and Switzerland. Air Corsica and Air France dominate; Volotea, Transavia, easyJet, Ryanair and Lufthansa add seasonal capacity. Winters are quiet with a few domestic flights a day.

After landing: Most flights park on the tarmac and you disembark via stairs and a short walk or bus to the terminal. Schengen formalities are usually a passport spot-check or nothing. Baggage belts can be slow in peak summer — 20-35 minutes is realistic when three or four planes land together.

The arrivals hall is modest. A car rental row (Hertz, Avis, Europcar, Sixt, Budget, Enterprise, Ada — book in advance in summer, on-the-spot rates are brutal), a small café, a few shops. The taxi rank and navette bus stop are outside the main door.

Corsica reality check: This is not the French mainland. Service speed is relaxed, especially off-season. Card terminals sometimes don't work. Some bus drivers will leave on the clock regardless of whether the last plane has landed. Plan accordingly.

STIB navette (airport shuttle bus): A shared coach service between BIA and Bastia city (terminating at Place Saint-Nicolas). €10 one way, cash or card on board. The journey is 30 minutes to central Bastia. The schedule claims to match most arrivals but in practice it serves roughly 10-12 departures a day in summer and fewer in winter. The last bus is typically around 21:00-22:00. If your flight lands later, the bus is not an option. Fine for light luggage; uncomfortable with two big suitcases.

Taxi: French taxi fares are regulated, not improvised: the tariff is fixed each year by an arrêté préfectoral for Haute-Corse. It sets a pickup charge plus a per-km rate, and — this is the part that catches people out — a higher per-km rate at night, on Sundays and on public holidays, plus a higher rate again on a one-way run where the taxi has to return empty. That last point is why an airport run to the far side of the island costs what it does. The airport does not publish a fare list, so agree the price with the driver before you set off, which is normal practice here. Taxis do accept card but sometimes "the machine isn't working" — bring cash as a backup. The rank is outside arrivals; in peak summer drivers are plentiful, off-season you may wait.

Uber, Bolt, Heetch: None of them operate in Corsica. There are no VTC app drivers to speak of. Ignore this option entirely.

Pre-booked transfer: Sedan €50-75 to Bastia, €90-130 to Saint-Florent, €170-230 to Calvi, €220-300 to Porto-Vecchio. This is not significantly cheaper than taxi for short runs but becomes meaningfully better value for long-distance transfers across the island, and it guarantees an English-speaking driver, a car seat if needed, and no card-terminal drama.

Rental car (the default): Honestly, for most Corsica trips renting a car at BIA is the right move. Off the main Bastia-Saint Florent-Calvi axis, public transport is nearly nonexistent. Roads are slow but beautiful. Book 4-8 weeks in advance in summer — rates climb steeply into July and August, and walk-up prices are punishing. Return-to-different-airport (Ajaccio, Figari) is usually possible but carries a one-way fee. Compare the rental companies directly for your dates.

Train: The CFC narrow-gauge railway does not serve the airport directly. The nearest station (Casamozza) is about 6 km away; there's no convenient shuttle. Not a practical option from BIA.

BIA is a daytime airport. The last flights usually land before midnight and the airport effectively closes overnight.

The STIB navette stops around 21:00-22:00. If your flight is delayed or lands later, the bus is gone.

Taxis meet most scheduled flights, and during peak summer a marshal is often on-site. Off-season or on a delayed late flight, supply is thin — 15-40 minutes of waiting is possible. Night tariff applies.

No ride-hailing apps work here. This is the key difference from mainland France — if you miss the navette at 22:00 and there are no taxis, you cannot summon an Uber.

Pre-booked transfer is the clear best option for any flight arriving after 21:00. Drivers monitor the flight and will wait. Given that Corsica roads at night are dark and the journey involves crossing rural stretches, pre-booking is also just safer and calmer — especially if you're driving on to Saint-Florent, Cap Corse, or Calvi.

BIA is genuinely easy with kids: short walks, uncrowded halls (outside summer weekends), and quick exits. The drive into Bastia is 20-25 minutes on a straight road across the plain — tolerable even for tired toddlers.

Child seats: French taxis in Corsica rarely have child seats. Rental cars can be booked with seats for a daily surcharge — confirm the price and availability at time of reservation. For a pre-booked transfer, request the seat when you book and confirm the child's age/weight.

Luggage: The STIB navette has some luggage space underneath but it fills up fast in summer. Taxis are mostly mid-size sedans — fine for 3 bags. For families with 4+ bags, strollers, and car seats, a pre-booked minivan transfer is worth the extra cost — trying to cram everything into one sedan after a long flight is miserable.

Rental cars: If you rent, remember that many Corsican roads are narrow with tight switchbacks. A compact or small SUV is a better choice than a large estate for anywhere beyond the main N193/T20 axis.

STIB navette: Marked stop directly outside the arrivals door, about 30 m to the right. The bus is a full-size coach, usually with a Bastia navette sign in the windshield. Drivers sell tickets onboard.

Taxi: Official rank right outside arrivals. In summer a small marshal desk operates; off-season it's self-serve. The taxi drivers here know each other — feel free to ask one taxi whether another is expected if the rank is empty.

Pre-booked transfer: Driver waits inside the arrivals hall with a name sign, near the exit door. If you have a delayed flight, the driver will still be there — they track the flight.

Car rental: Counters are all in the main hall. After paperwork, the lot is a short walk from the terminal. In peak summer add 30-45 minutes to the paperwork — the queues are legendary.
