Bergen Airport Flesland is a modern, compact terminal that is straightforward for families. It was expanded in 2017 and is well-designed for accessibility. Here is what families arriving with children need to know.
Inside the terminal
The terminal has baby changing facilities, clean restrooms, and a family-friendly layout. Trolleys are available at baggage claim. The walk from gates to baggage claim to the exit is short and entirely step-free. Strollers are returned at the oversized baggage area. If you need to feed or change a baby before leaving, the facilities are adequate.
The Bybanen with children
The Bybanen light rail is fully accessible with level boarding, dedicated stroller spaces, and luggage areas. Families with a stroller and one or two suitcases can use it comfortably. The 45-minute ride is smooth and scenic.
The fares are the best part, and better than most families expect. Skyss lets children under 6 travel free, prices a child aged 6-17 at NOK 26 for a one-zone single, and — the important bit — an adult holding a valid ticket may bring up to four children free. In practice a family of two adults and two children pays two adult fares, NOK 102, for the ride into town. (Skyss prices, in force from 1 February 2026.)
However, during peak commuter hours (7-9 AM, 3-5 PM), the tram can be crowded. If you are arriving during these windows with significant luggage and a stroller, it may be worth considering a taxi instead.
Taxis and child seats
Norwegian law requires child seats in cars, including taxis. In practice, many Bergen taxis can accommodate a child seat if you request one when booking or at the rank. However, availability is not guaranteed, and with seven separate operators at Flesland it varies by company. Your best option for certainty:

Practical family tips
- The Bybanen is often the best choice for families. It is spacious, accessible, and children enjoy watching the scenery. With up to four children riding free alongside a paying adult, the price is unbeatable.
- Bergen weather is wet. The city averages over 200 rainy days per year. Have rain gear accessible, not packed in checked luggage.
- Buy Bybanen tickets before boarding. Use the machines at the platform (card only) or the Skyss app. There is no grace period and inspectors do check.
- If heading to a fjord destination, a pre-booked transfer or rental car is more practical than public transport.
- Norwegian food is expensive. If your children need snacks, consider buying them before arriving rather than at the airport.
