Porto gives you several good transport options from the airport, and the right choice depends on your luggage, destination, and how tired you are.
The metro
Line E connects the airport to the city center in about 30-40 minutes. The fare is a Z4 Andante ticket: EUR 2.30 (Metro do Porto tariff, in force since 1 January 2026), plus EUR 0.60 once for the reusable Andante Azul card you buy at the station machines. Trains run every 20-30 minutes.
The metro is clean and safe. It handles luggage, though you will need to navigate turnstiles with your bags. Some central Porto stations have lifts, others rely on stairs. For solo travelers or couples with standard luggage, this is the most cost-effective option.
The metro does not go directly to Ribeira (the waterfront) or some hillside neighborhoods. You may need to walk 10-15 minutes from the nearest station, which involves Porto's characteristic steep hills and cobblestones.
Taxis
Metered taxis queue outside arrivals. The journey takes 15-25 minutes. Porto taxis run on a meter. The tariff is set nationally rather than by the city, and the rate card must be displayed inside the cab - read it before you set off. Portugal's taxi tariff is under revision during 2026, including the supplements, so any fixed figure you read in a guide can be out of date; ask the driver for an estimate before you travel, or book a fixed price in advance. Supplements can apply on top of the meter, and these are among the items being changed in the 2026 revision - the rate card in the cab is the authority, not a guide.
Porto taxis are generally reliable. The occasional driver takes a slightly longer route, but major overcharging is uncommon. Ensure the meter is running from the start.
Uber and Bolt
Both services operate well at Porto airport and usually work out cheaper than a metered taxi, but app pricing moves with demand, so check a live quote rather than assuming a fixed saving. The pickup point is a short walk from the terminal.
You need phone data to use these apps. The airport has Wi-Fi, or you can buy a Portuguese SIM at the terminal. During normal hours, wait times are under 10 minutes.
Pre-booked private transfers
A transfer arranged before your trip costs EUR 18-28 to central Porto, with a fixed price, a driver at arrivals, and the ability to specify vehicle type or car seats. Its advantage over a taxi is that you know the number before you fly, rather than watching a meter.
The value of a transfer increases for destinations outside Porto. If heading to the Douro Valley, Braga, Guimaraes, or a rural hotel, a transfer with a fixed price and a driver who knows the destination is significantly better than trying to explain a remote location to a taxi driver.

The verdict
For central Porto with light luggage during the day: take the metro. It is cheap, reliable, and gives you a first look at the city.
For central Porto with heavy luggage or children: Uber is usually the cheapest of the cars, a taxi is the most immediate, and a transfer is the most comfortable and the only one with a price fixed in advance.
For anywhere beyond Porto (Douro Valley, Braga, Guimaraes, beach towns): book a transfer. The fixed price, door-to-door service, and driver knowledge of the destination make it the clear winner for longer journeys.
