Funchal Airport to the City – What You Actually Need to Know

Funchal Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport (FNC) is located about 18 km east of Funchal city center, along the southern coast of Madeira. The drive takes 20–30 minutes via the VR1 motorway.

Your options: a pre-booked private transfer (from EUR 25–40), a taxi (metered, starting at EUR 4.00 from the airport), or the Aerobus, SAM's express airport service, which stops near most Funchal hotels. Many visitors are heading to hotels outside Funchal — in Calheta, Santana, or Porto Moniz — which cost more and take longer.

FNC is a compact, modern airport with one terminal. The famous runway extension over the ocean on pillars is visible as you land — it is one of the most spectacular approaches in Europe.

After landing, baggage claim is quick and the arrivals hall is small. You will find a tourist information desk, ATMs, car rental counters, and a few shops. The airport is efficient and rarely congested — even during peak season you should be through baggage claim within 15–25 minutes.

Free Wi-Fi is available. The exit leads directly to the taxi rank and bus stop area.

Taxi fares are set by the official Madeira tariff, not by us. We could not verify a current per-kilometre figure or a fixed airport price for these routes, so we are not going to print one — check the table posted at the rank, or agree the fare with the driver, before you set off.

Madeira's roads are excellent — modern motorways with tunnels cutting through the mountains. The drive is smooth but can be winding on secondary roads.

Madeira taxi fares are regulated. According to Madeira Airport's own website, a weekday trip starting at the airport begins with a base price of EUR 4.00, and a 20% surcharge applies between 21:00 and 06:00 and all day on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. Carrying baggage or an animal adds EUR 1.50.

We could not verify a current per-kilometre rate, or an official fixed airport-to-Funchal price, from the tariff itself — so we are not going to guess one. The rate table is set by the regional government with the taxi association (AITRAM): check the table posted at the rank, or confirm the fare with the driver, before you set off. Note that the 20% weekend surcharge means the same trip costs more on a Saturday than on a Tuesday.

The Aerobus is SAM's express airport service. Do not confuse it with line 113, which is one of SAM's ordinary bus routes serving Machico, Santa Cruz and Caniçal — different service, different fare. The Aerobus runs from the airport into Funchal and on to Praia Formosa, reaching Avenida do Mar in the city centre in about 24 minutes and the Estrada Monumental hotel zone in roughly 35–47 minutes. Departures from the airport run from about 08:30 to 22:00 — about every 30 minutes in the morning, hourly in the afternoon — every day except 25 December. Payment is cash only, and there is free Wi-Fi on board. Fares changed on 1 April 2026, so check the current one with SAM or on the regional government's SIGA site before you travel.

Pre-booked transfers offer a fixed price and the convenience of a driver waiting — useful if you are heading to a specific hotel in the hills above Funchal where addresses can be confusing.

FNC receives flights until approximately 23:00–midnight, with some charter and low-cost flights arriving late in the evening. The Aerobus runs hourly into the evening, with the last departure from the airport at 22:00 on the current SIGA timetable.

Taxis are available for all scheduled flights. For very late arrivals, the taxi queue may be shorter than usual, but vehicles are still present at the rank.

A pre-booked transfer is recommended for late arrivals heading to destinations beyond Funchal — finding your way to Calheta or Santana at night without local knowledge is not ideal.

FNC is a relaxed, family-friendly airport. The terminal is flat, compact, and easy to navigate with strollers. Luggage trolleys are available.

For families with children, the main transport consideration is car seats. Portuguese law requires child restraints for children under 12 years old or shorter than 135 cm. Taxis in Madeira generally do not carry child seats. A pre-booked transfer is the reliable way to get seats for your children.

The Aerobus has luggage storage underneath and can accommodate strollers, but managing multiple bags and children on a bus with stops is less comfortable than a direct transfer.

Pre-booked transfers: Drivers wait in the arrivals hall with a name sign, or just outside at the designated pickup area. The airport is small — finding your driver takes seconds.

Taxis: The taxi rank is directly outside the arrivals exit, about 20 meters to the right. Taxis queue in order and the line moves quickly.

Aerobus: The bus stop is outside arrivals, clearly signed. Check the posted timetable and wait at the marked stop — and have cash ready, as the Aerobus does not take cards.

Take the Aerobus if: you are heading to Funchal center or a hotel on the Estrada Monumental strip, traveling light, and happy to take a bus rather than a car. It is clean, modern and scenic — just bring cash, as it does not take cards.

Take a taxi if: you want door-to-door service without pre-booking, have moderate luggage, and your destination is Funchal or nearby.

Book a transfer if: you are heading to a hotel in the hills above Funchal, to western Madeira (Calheta, Porto Moniz), traveling with children who need car seats, or arriving late at night.

Rent a car if: you plan to explore Madeira's mountains, levadas, and coastal villages. The island is made for driving, and rental prices are competitive — compare the agencies directly for your dates, as rates swing with the season.
