Funchal Airport to the City – What You Actually Need to Know

Funchal Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport (FNC) is located about 18 km east of Funchal city center, along the southern coast of Madeira. The drive takes 20–30 minutes via the VR1 motorway.

Your options: a pre-booked private transfer (from EUR 25–40), a taxi (EUR 25–35), or the Aerobus 113 (EUR 5). Many visitors are heading to hotels outside Funchal — in Calheta, Santana, or Porto Moniz — which cost more and take longer.

FNC is a compact, modern airport with one terminal. The famous runway extension over the ocean on pillars is visible as you land — it is one of the most spectacular approaches in Europe.

After landing, baggage claim is quick and the arrivals hall is small. You will find a tourist information desk, ATMs, car rental counters, and a few shops. The airport is efficient and rarely congested — even during peak season you should be through baggage claim within 15–25 minutes.

Free Wi-Fi is available. The exit leads directly to the taxi rank and bus stop area.

Madeira's roads are excellent — modern motorways with tunnels cutting through the mountains. The drive is smooth but can be winding on secondary roads.

Madeira taxi fares are regulated and reasonably consistent. The meter starts at approximately EUR 2 with a per-km charge of about EUR 0.50–0.60. For the airport-to-Funchal run, expect EUR 25–35 depending on your exact destination within the city.

There is no night surcharge for taxis in Madeira, but trips to more remote areas cost more due to distance.

The Aerobus 113 at EUR 5 is a genuine bargain. It runs along the coastal route from the airport through Santa Cruz to Funchal, with stops at major hotel areas. The journey takes 30–45 minutes and runs roughly every hour.

Pre-booked transfers offer a fixed price and the convenience of a driver waiting — useful if you are heading to a specific hotel in the hills above Funchal where addresses can be confusing.

FNC receives flights until approximately 23:00–midnight, with some charter and low-cost flights arriving late in the evening. The Aerobus 113 has limited service after 20:00, with the last bus typically running around 21:00–22:00 depending on the season.

Taxis are available for all scheduled flights. For very late arrivals, the taxi queue may be shorter than usual, but vehicles are still present at the rank.

A pre-booked transfer is recommended for late arrivals heading to destinations beyond Funchal — finding your way to Calheta or Santana at night without local knowledge is not ideal.

FNC is a relaxed, family-friendly airport. The terminal is flat, compact, and easy to navigate with strollers. Luggage trolleys are available.

For families with children, the main transport consideration is car seats. Portuguese law requires child restraints for children under 12 years old or shorter than 135 cm. Taxis in Madeira generally do not carry child seats. A pre-booked transfer is the reliable way to get seats for your children.

The Aerobus has luggage storage underneath and can accommodate strollers, but managing multiple bags and children on a bus with stops is less comfortable than a direct transfer.

Taxis: The taxi rank is directly outside the arrivals exit, about 20 meters to the right. Taxis queue in order and the line moves quickly.

Aerobus 113: The bus stop is outside arrivals, clearly signed. Check the posted timetable and wait at the marked stop.

Take a taxi if: you want door-to-door service without pre-booking, have moderate luggage, and your destination is Funchal or nearby.

Book a transfer if: you are heading to a hotel in the hills above Funchal, to western Madeira (Calheta, Porto Moniz), traveling with children who need car seats, or arriving late at night.

Rent a car if: you plan to explore Madeira's mountains, levadas, and coastal villages. The island is made for driving, and rental prices are competitive starting from about EUR 20/day.
