JKIA is roughly 15 km from central Nairobi, but the cost of getting there depends as much on the transport mode you choose as on the distance. Here is what is actually documented, and what is not.
The Expressway toll: the one published number
The Nairobi Expressway is a toll road running above the congested Mombasa Road corridor. Using it can cut 30-60 minutes off your journey during peak hours. It is priced by origin and destination, not by distance or by how many plazas you pass.
For a Class 3 saloon entering at JKIA, the gazetted base rates are:
| Exit | Base toll (excl. VAT) |
|---|---|
| Eastern Bypass | KSh 170 |
| Southern Bypass | KSh 250 |
| Capital Centre | KSh 250 |
| Haile Selassie | KSh 330 |
| Museum Hill | KSh 330 |
| Nairobi Westlands | KSh 410 |

Source: Kenya Gazette Notice No. 17419 of 19 December 2023, issued under the Public Roads Toll Act (Cap. 407). The rates are gazetted, so they change by gazette notice rather than quietly — but do check before you travel.
Most pre-booked transfers include the toll in their quoted price. Uber and Bolt drivers will typically ask if you want to use it, and the toll is added to your fare. Airport taxis may or may not include it, so clarify before agreeing a price.
During off-peak hours, the regular road is acceptable and the Expressway is less necessary.
Why there are no fare tables on this page
We used to print shilling ranges for taxis, transfers and Uber to each neighbourhood. We have taken them out, because there is nothing authoritative behind them:
- Airport taxis at JKIA do not use meters. The fare is negotiated, so there is no tariff to cite and no "correct" price to check a quote against.
- Uber and Bolt price dynamically. Any number we printed would be wrong by the time you read it — and the app tells you the real price before you accept, which is better than our estimate.
- The shilling moves. A dual KES/USD figure rots twice over, and the two halves drift apart until the sentence contradicts itself.
Distances and drive times
| Destination | Distance from JKIA | Drive time (traffic dependent) |
|---|---|---|
| Wilson Airport (safari connections) | ~10 km | 15-45 min |
| Nairobi CBD / City Center | ~15 km | 20-90 min |
| Upper Hill | ~15 km | 20-75 min |
| Westlands / Parklands | ~20 km | 25-90 min |
| Karen / Langata | ~25 km | 30-75 min |
The spread in those drive times is the real story of this journey: the same 15 km can be 20 minutes or 90 depending on when you land.
Why quotes vary so much
Several factors move the price:
- Traffic: The same journey costs more by taxi when the driver is stuck for an hour rather than 20 minutes. Meters are not used, but drivers factor in time.
- Negotiation: Airport taxi fares are not fixed. The first price quoted is usually inflated.
- Surge pricing: Uber and Bolt may apply surge multipliers during peak arrivals, though this is uncommon at JKIA.
- Vehicle type: An SUV transfer costs more than a standard sedan.
- The toll: Whether the Expressway toll is inside or on top of the quote.
The budget perspective
Ride-hailing is the cheapest car option at JKIA and the apps show the fare before you accept — that is your real number, and it beats anything we could print. The trade-off is that you need a working phone with data, you wait for the driver, and the vehicle may be basic.
Pre-booked transfers cost more but offer a fixed price agreed before you land, guaranteed availability, and a more predictable experience. For visitors arriving after a long international flight, the convenience premium is modest.
Negotiated airport taxis offer immediate availability without pre-planning, but they are the option with the least price transparency — there is no tariff behind them.
What to budget
Get the real numbers rather than a budget from us: open Uber or Bolt when you land and read the quoted fare, or get a transfer quote for your dates before you fly. Then add the Expressway toll from the gazetted table above if you are travelling at peak hours and want to use it.
