Arriving at Nairobi airport with children

Last updated: February 2026

Many families pass through JKIA on their way to safari. Whether Nairobi is your destination or a transit point, here is what the arrival experience looks like with kids.

The terminal

JKIA's Terminal 1 is functional but showing its age. The walk from the aircraft to immigration can be long, and the terminal is not always air-conditioned effectively. With tired children, this stretch can test patience. Trolleys are available at baggage claim but are sometimes in short supply during busy periods.

There is no dedicated family lane at immigration. If you have very young children, you may be able to join a shorter queue, but this is at the discretion of the officers. Budget extra time and keep expectations modest.

The arrivals area has basic amenities. Restrooms are available. Food options are limited to a few kiosks. If your children are hungry, bring snacks from the flight.

Car seats

This is critical. Kenyan taxis do not carry child car seats, and Uber vehicles will not have them either. If your child requires a car seat, your options are:

1. Bring your own travel car seat. This is the most reliable approach, especially if continuing to a safari lodge where car seats are also uncommon. 2. Request one through a pre-booked transfer. Specify ages and weights at the time of booking. Not all providers have seats for all age groups, so confirm explicitly.

Kenyan road safety standards differ from what you may be accustomed to. Speed bumps are aggressive, some roads are rough, and driving styles vary. A proper car seat is not optional for young children, regardless of what local practice may be.

The drive and traffic

If you arrive during peak hours (roughly 07:00-09:30 or 16:30-19:30), the drive to central Nairobi or Westlands can take well over an hour on Mombasa Road. For families with young children, this is a long time in a car on bumpy roads.

The Nairobi Expressway is your friend. It cuts the journey time dramatically and is a smoother road. Ask your driver to use it, or confirm that your transfer service includes Expressway tolls.

If you have flexibility in flight times, arriving late morning or early afternoon avoids the worst traffic and gives your children a more bearable journey.

Safari connections

Many families transit through Nairobi to reach safari destinations via Wilson Airport (for light aircraft) or by road to parks like the Maasai Mara. Wilson Airport is about 10 km from JKIA, a drive that can take 15 minutes off-peak or much longer in traffic.

If your safari flight is the same day as your international arrival, allow generous buffer time. A delayed flight plus slow immigration plus traffic could eat hours. Many families wisely spend one night in Nairobi before continuing.

Practical tips for families

  • Book a transfer with child seats well in advance. Confirm the seat type matches your child's needs.
  • Request a larger vehicle (SUV or minivan) if traveling with car seats, strollers, and safari luggage.
  • Pack snacks, water, and entertainment for the car ride. Nairobi traffic jams are real.
  • Consider staying near Wilson Airport if you have an early morning safari flight the next day.
  • Keep hand sanitizer accessible. The airport and vehicle may not meet the hygiene standards young children need.
  • Nairobi sits at 1,700 meters altitude. If coming from sea level, children may feel slightly off for the first day.
