Taxi, Uber, or pre-booked transfer from Nairobi airport

Last updated: February 2026

Nairobi offers more ground transport options than most African airports. Each has genuine trade-offs, and the best choice depends on your circumstances.

Airport taxis

Licensed taxis wait at the rank outside Terminal 1. They are regulated by Kenya Airports Authority, but fare negotiation is the norm. There are no meters for airport runs. You agree on a price before departure, and that price depends on your destination, the time of day, and your negotiating skills.

Typical fares: KES 2,500-5,000 to most Nairobi destinations (roughly USD 18-38). Drivers know the city well, and most speak English. Vehicle condition varies from acceptable to quite good.

The main risk with airport taxis is overcharging, particularly for visitors who clearly just arrived and do not know local rates. Having a sense of the going rate before you land helps enormously.

Uber and Bolt

Both apps work well at JKIA and offer the cheapest car option. Fares are typically 40-60% lower than airport taxis. The app shows the price upfront, the route is tracked, and payment goes through the app.

You need phone data to request a ride. Buy a SIM at the airport or use the terminal Wi-Fi. The pickup zone is a short walk from the terminal and is marked.

The downside is wait time, which can be 5-15 minutes, and vehicle quality is unpredictable. During surge pricing (rare at the airport), costs rise but are still usually below taxi rates.

Pre-booked private transfers

A transfer arranged before your trip means a driver is waiting at arrivals with a name board. The vehicle is typically an SUV or comfortable sedan, the price is fixed, and there is no negotiation or app-wrestling after a long flight.

Pricing falls between Uber and taxi rates, with the added value of guaranteed availability, flight tracking, and a known vehicle. For groups or families, a transfer in a larger vehicle can actually be cost-competitive with two Uber rides.

Head-to-head comparison

| Factor | Airport taxi | Uber/Bolt | Pre-booked transfer | |--------|------------|-----------|--------------------| | Price to CBD | KES 2,500-4,000 | KES 800-1,500 | KES 1,800-3,000 | | Wait time | Minimal | 5-15 min | None | | Price certainty | Negotiated | App shows price | Fixed at booking | | Vehicle quality | Variable | Variable | Typically good | | Night availability | Reduced | Good | Guaranteed | | Safety rating | Good (licensed) | Good (tracked) | Good (vetted) |

The Nairobi Expressway factor

Whoever drives you, the Nairobi Expressway makes a massive difference during peak traffic hours. It adds KES 300-500 in tolls but can save 30-60 minutes. Most transfer services include the toll. Uber drivers will typically ask if you want to use it. Airport taxi drivers may or may not suggest it.

Who should choose what

Pre-booked transfer: First-time visitors, families, late-night arrivals, anyone who values certainty over saving a few dollars. The peace of mind of a known driver at a known price is worth the modest premium over Uber.

Uber/Bolt: Budget-conscious travelers comfortable with ride-hailing apps, daytime arrivals, solo travelers or couples with light luggage.

Airport taxi: Travelers who want to leave immediately, have no phone data, and are confident negotiating. Fine for experienced Africa travelers who know the going rates.
