Getting from Krabi Airport to Ao Nang, Krabi Town, and Railay — What You Need to Know

Krabi Airport (KBV) is a small, manageable airport about 15 km from Krabi Town and 25-30 km from Ao Nang beach, where most tourists stay. There is no rail connection. Your options are a pre-booked private transfer, a shared airport shuttle van, a metered taxi or airport limousine, or a local songthaew. To Railay Beach, you need road transport to a pier followed by a longtail boat — no vehicle can drive there.

Fares are posted at the transport counters in arrivals rather than published online, so treat the board as the source of truth and buy there. Most travelers heading to Ao Nang find a pre-booked transfer or the shared shuttle the most practical choices.

KBV is a single-terminal airport that handles both domestic and international flights. It is modern, clean, and compact — you will not get lost. Immigration for international arrivals is straightforward and usually takes 15-30 minutes. Domestic arrivals skip this entirely.

After baggage claim, you exit into an arrivals hall with currency exchange booths (rates are acceptable, not great), SIM card vendors, and transport counters. There are several counters offering different transport types — shared minivans, private taxis, and limousine services. ATMs are available and accept international cards. Thai Baht is the only currency you need.

The airport has a small food court and convenience stores if you need to grab something before your onward journey.

Pre-booked private transfer: A driver meets you at arrivals with a name sign. You get a dedicated vehicle to your hotel. This is the most comfortable option, especially after a long flight. The price is quoted per vehicle and fixed when you book, so you know it before you fly.

Shared airport shuttle (minivan): Several companies run shared minivans from the airport to Ao Nang and Krabi Town. You buy a ticket at the counter in arrivals, wait until the van fills up (or near departure time), and share the ride with other travelers. It is the cheapest door-to-door option by a wide margin. The downside: you wait for the van to fill, it makes multiple hotel stops, and the whole journey can take 60-90 minutes to Ao Nang vs 35-40 in a private car.

Airport taxi (metered): Metered taxis are available outside arrivals, running on the meter plus an airport surcharge. This is a legitimate option but slightly less predictable than a pre-booked transfer, since you do not know the exact car or driver in advance and the meter reflects the route taken.

Airport limousine: A step above the standard taxi. Counters in the arrivals hall offer fixed-price rides in nicer vehicles at rates posted on the board. Higher than a metered taxi, but you get a newer car and a confirmed price before you set off.

Songthaew (shared truck-taxi): These converted pickup trucks with bench seats run between the airport and Krabi Town for a few tens of baht. They do not go to Ao Nang directly. Practical for solo budget travelers heading to Krabi Town, but not comfortable with heavy luggage or for families.

Grab (ride-hailing app): Grab works in Krabi but driver availability at the airport can be inconsistent. When it works, the app quotes you upfront before you accept. Worth trying as a backup, but do not rely on it as your only plan.

Fares are posted on the boards at the transport counters in the arrivals hall, and you buy before you board. That board is the only price worth trusting: we are not printing figures here, because neither the airport nor the operators publish them anywhere we could verify, and a stale number quoted with confidence is worse than no number at all. Check the board, and check it against a second counter — they are lined up next to each other.

For Railay Beach, all road transport ends at a pier (either Ao Nang or Ao Nam Mao). From there, a longtail boat is the only way in — there is no road access. Boats charge per person when shared, or more to charter privately, and the fare is agreed at the pier.

The rough shape worth knowing: the shuttle is cheapest for one or two people; once you are three or four heading to the same hotel, a private vehicle usually works out similar per person and saves an hour of stops. Do that arithmetic at the counter with the posted prices in front of you, not from a table on a website.

KBV receives flights until about 11 PM-midnight, including international arrivals from Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, and domestic flights from Bangkok. The transport counters in arrivals generally stay open for the last arriving flights. Shared shuttles may not run late, or you may wait longer for them to fill.

A pre-booked transfer is the reliable late-night choice. Metered taxis are available but fewer in number. The roads to Ao Nang and Krabi Town are well-paved and the drive is fine at night.

Important note for Railay: longtail boats to Railay do not run after dark due to the rocky coastline and lack of lighting. If you arrive late, you will need to overnight in Ao Nang or Krabi Town and take a morning boat. Plan around this.

Krabi Airport is family-friendly in terms of size and ease of navigation. With children, a private transfer is the comfortable choice — shared shuttles with multiple stops and a longer journey test patience after a flight.

Child seats are not standard in Thai taxis. Request one when booking a transfer. Some services can provide them, but confirm in advance. Many families in Thailand simply hold younger children, which is common locally but not what safety-conscious parents prefer.

If heading to Railay with children and luggage, plan carefully. The longtail boat involves wading through shallow water to board, and boats do not have safety equipment for children. Some families find it easier to base in Ao Nang and visit Railay by day.

Pre-booked drivers wait in the arrivals hall, usually near the exit, holding a sign with your name or your booking reference. The airport is small enough that finding each other is easy.

For shared shuttles, the counter staff will direct you to the loading area outside the terminal. For metered taxis, follow signs to the taxi stand. The whole process is well-organized — Krabi Airport handles tourist arrivals efficiently.

Book a private transfer if: you are heading to Ao Nang or beyond, want door-to-door service, are traveling with family, arriving late, or simply value convenience after a flight.

Take the shared shuttle if: you are on a budget, traveling solo or as a couple, heading to Ao Nang or Krabi Town, and do not mind a longer, multi-stop journey.

Use a metered taxi if: you want to go now without waiting, are comfortable with metered fares, and are heading to a straightforward destination.

Try Grab if: you have the app, there is a driver available, and you want a potentially cheaper ride. But have a backup plan.

Take a songthaew if: you are a solo budget traveler heading to Krabi Town only.
