Railay pricing explained
Railay is road-inaccessible. The cost includes road transport to a pier (Ao Nang or Ao Nam Mao) plus a longtail boat. The boat portion costs 100-200 THB per person if sharing with others, or 800-1,500 THB to charter a boat privately. Total door-to-beach cost from the airport: 400-1,800 THB depending on how you combine the segments.
What affects the price
- Distance: The further your hotel, the more it costs. Krabi Town is close and cheap. Koh Lanta involves a long drive plus a ferry.
- Vehicle type: A sedan costs less than an SUV or minivan. If you are two people with normal luggage, a sedan is fine.
- Time of day: Prices are fairly stable, but shared shuttles may not run late at night.
- Number of travelers: Shared shuttles charge per person. A group of 4 going to Ao Nang pays 800-1,200 THB total on a shuttle versus 900-1,200 THB for a private car — at that point, the private transfer is better value.
Tips on payment
Thai Baht is the only useful currency. Airport counters accept cash THB. Pre-booked transfers are often paid online. Metered taxis take cash only. ATMs at the airport work with international cards but charge a 220 THB fee per withdrawal — this is Thailand-wide and unavoidable.
Tipping
Tipping is not mandatory in Thailand but appreciated for good service. Rounding up the fare or adding 50-100 THB for a helpful driver is common. For longer drives (Koh Lanta, for example), 100-200 THB is generous.
Best value by scenario
- Solo traveler to Ao Nang: Shared shuttle at 200-300 THB
- Couple to Ao Nang: Private transfer at 900-1,200 THB (split: 450-600 each)
- Family of 4 to Ao Nang: Private transfer — works out cheaper per person than shuttle and far more comfortable
- Budget traveler to Krabi Town: Songthaew at 50-100 THB
