Islamabad International Airport (ISB) — Getting to the City Without Overpaying

Islamabad International Airport sits roughly 30 km southwest of the city center in Fateh Jang. A standard taxi or Careem ride to Blue Area or F-sectors takes 35-50 minutes depending on traffic. Airport taxi fares here are not regulated by anyone - the airport itself tells passengers to agree the fare before setting off - so ask the counter or check the app rather than trusting a printed range. A pre-booked private transfer runs EUR 18-30 and removes every hassle — fixed price, meet-and-greet, no negotiating at 2 AM.

The airport is relatively modern, opened in 2018. After passport control and baggage claim, you exit into the arrivals hall. There is a small currency exchange counter before the exit doors, but rates are mediocre — exchange only what you need for the ride if you must.

Once outside, you will find yourself on a wide covered pavement. Licensed taxi counters are to the right. Drivers will approach you — some licensed, some not. The airport has improved its management of touts over the years, but late at night the situation can feel a bit chaotic if you have never been to Pakistan before.

Mobile data: if your phone is unlocked, you can buy a Jazz or Zong SIM at counters inside arrivals. This helps enormously for booking a Careem ride.

Careem is the dominant ride-hailing app and works reliably at ISB. You will need a local or international number registered in the app. inDriver lets you set your own price, but drivers may decline low bids at peak hours.

There is no metro or rail link to the airport. The Rawalpindi metro is not connected. A bus service (Metro Bus feeder) has been discussed for years but remains unreliable.

ISB handles a good number of Gulf and European flights arriving between 11 PM and 4 AM. Careem drivers are fewer after midnight but still available — expect a 5-15 minute wait and slightly higher fares. Airport taxis operate 24/7 but bargaining power shifts to the driver at 2 AM.

A pre-booked transfer is the stress-free option for late arrivals. Your driver tracks your flight and waits regardless of delays. The road into the city is quiet at night, so the drive is actually faster — often under 30 minutes.

Standard Careem vehicles are small sedans. If you have more than two large suitcases, book a Careem Business or SUV category, or arrange a private transfer with a larger vehicle. Airport taxis are mostly Toyota Corollas — fine for two passengers with luggage, tight for more.

Child car seats are essentially unavailable in local taxis. If traveling with small children, a pre-booked transfer with a car seat request is the only reliable option. The airport has trolleys available free of charge in arrivals.

For Careem/inDriver: exit the arrivals hall, cross the pickup lane, and wait at the designated ride-hailing area. Drivers cannot enter the terminal building. Share your pin location in the app.

For airport taxis: the taxi counter is to the right as you exit arrivals. Pay at the counter or agree on a fare with the driver directly.

For pre-booked transfers: your driver will typically hold a name sign inside the arrivals hall or just outside the exit doors. You will receive contact details in advance.

Choose Careem or inDriver if you are a solo traveler or couple, have a working phone with data, and want the cheapest option.

Choose an airport taxi if you do not have a local SIM and just want to get going quickly without downloading apps.

Choose a pre-booked private transfer if you are arriving late at night, traveling with family, have lots of luggage, or simply do not want to deal with negotiating after a long flight.
