Why prices vary for a 6 km ride

The distance from Batumi airport to the city center is short and fixed. But the price you pay depends on several factors:

Time of year. Batumi is a summer resort town. In July and August, more flights arrive, more taxis wait, but more passengers compete for them. Drivers during peak season may be less inclined to negotiate downward.

Time of day. A daytime arrival with multiple taxis waiting gives you negotiating leverage. A midnight arrival with two drivers waiting does not.

Your negotiating approach. Knowing the going rate and stating it calmly gets you a fair price. Asking "how much?" without a counter-offer usually results in a higher quote.

The bus: almost free

Bus route 10 connects the airport to central Batumi in about 20 minutes, and the airport gives the fare as 0.30 GEL — essentially free. The catch is that it runs on a limited schedule, may not align with your flight arrival, and is not practical with heavy luggage or children. For a solo backpacker arriving during the day, it is a perfectly good option.

You get the fare quoted before you request, cashless payment, and a tracked driver — and at an airport with no meters and no published rates, an up-front number is worth a lot. The catch is that you need working mobile data, and driver availability at the airport depends on time and season.

Taxi: the default option

Most travelers take a taxi because it is the obvious and immediate option. You walk out, find a driver, agree on a price. Obviously foreign travelers get quoted more — that is simply how it works here.

There is no meter system in use at Batumi airport and no regulated rate, so there is no official "correct" fare to point at. The practical move is to open Bolt and see what the app quotes for your trip, then use that as your benchmark when you talk to the drivers at the kerb. If a quote is far above it, walk to the next car.

Pre-booked transfer: paying for certainty

Currency and payment

The Georgian lari (GEL) is the local currency. ATMs at the airport accept international cards and dispense lari. For a taxi ride you need cash in lari — withdraw enough for the fare you agree, plus a little spare. Do not bother exchanging money before arriving in Georgia - the ATM rate at the airport is reasonable and you only need a small amount for the short ride.

Tipping
