Stockholm Arlanda Airport to the city: what you actually need to know

Arlanda Airport is about 40 km north of Stockholm city centre. The Arlanda Express train is the fastest option, at a non-stop 18 minutes. Airport coaches, taxis, rideshares, and pre-booked transfers are also available. The distance is significant by European standards, so budget more time than you might expect.

Arlanda has four terminals. Terminals 2 and 5 handle international flights, while Terminals 3 and 4 are primarily domestic. If you are arriving from within the Schengen Area, there is no passport check. For non-Schengen flights, immigration is handled efficiently with automated e-gates for EU/EEA passports and manned booths for others. Wait times are typically 10-20 minutes but can stretch during morning peak hours when long-haul flights from Asia cluster.

Baggage claim is straightforward. Luggage trolleys are free. After collecting bags, you walk into the arrivals hall. Each terminal has its own arrivals area, but they are connected by the SkyCity walkway between Terminals 4 and 5. The Arlanda Express station is located between Terminals 2/3 (southern station) and Terminal 5 (northern station). Bus stops are outside each terminal. Taxi ranks are at the exit doors.

Arlanda Express is the premium train service — a non-stop 18-minute run to Stockholm Central, every 10-15 minutes during the day. The operator's published fares are SEK 340 single / SEK 640 return for an adult (26-64), SEK 160 single for youth (18-25) and for children (0-17), and SEK 210 single for pensioners (65+). Children travel free with an adult or pensioner ticket holder, and singles and returns are valid for 90 days. It is fast, clean, and reliable. Fares are revised from time to time — check the operator before you travel.

Flygbussarna (Airport Coaches) run to Stockholm City Terminal (next to Central Station) and take 40-50 minutes depending on traffic, every 10-15 minutes during peak hours. This is the budget-conscious choice — cheaper than the train by a wide margin. Fares change and vary by how you buy, so check the operator's site or app for the current price rather than relying on a figure quoted elsewhere.

SL Commuter Train (Pendeltag) runs from Arlanda to Stockholm Central, taking about 40 minutes. On top of the normal SL fare you pay a station fee at Arlanda Central, which Swedavia publishes as SEK 157. That fee is what makes this option far less of a bargain than it looks — once you add it to the SL ticket, you are not saving much against the Arlanda Express, and you are travelling more slowly.

Taxis wait at ranks outside each terminal. Sweden has no regulated national taxi tariff — each company sets its own prices — so what protects you at Arlanda is Swedavia's own rule: a company must hold an agreement with the airport to pick up here, and that agreement caps the fare. Swedavia publishes the cap for a trip within the marked zone to a single address as roughly SEK 800 for 1-4 passengers and SEK 1,275 for 5-8. That is a ceiling, not a quote: the contracted companies compete below it, and many will give you a fixed price. Swedavia's own advice is to ask whether the company applies a fixed price, and if so to check that it is entered and visible in the taximeter before you set off — the meter must be running throughout the journey either way. Taxi Stockholm (020 20 20 20) and Sverige Taxi are among the established names.

Uber operates at Arlanda. It is dynamically priced, so the app quote before you confirm is the only number that means anything.

Getting to Stockholm city centre:

For destinations outside Stockholm, prices rise substantially and the Swedavia taxi cap does not apply — it only covers trips within the marked zone. Uppsala is actually closer to Arlanda (about 35 km) than Stockholm is. For anywhere beyond the zone, agree a fixed price before you set off or book a transfer, because there is no ceiling doing the work for you.

The Arlanda Express runs until around midnight and resumes in the early morning — check the operator's current timetable, as first and last departures shift. Flygbussarna run later, with reduced overnight frequency (roughly one bus per hour between midnight and 4 AM). Taxis are always available at the ranks. Late night taxi availability is good since Arlanda is a major hub, though you may wait 5-10 minutes during quiet hours. Rideshare availability drops significantly after midnight. If you land between midnight and 5 AM, a taxi or pre-booked transfer is the most reliable option.

The Arlanda Express has generous luggage space and is comfortable with children. The ride is short enough that kids rarely get restless. Flygbussarna coaches have luggage compartments underneath. Both are manageable for families. However, if you have a stroller, car seat, and multiple large bags, the walk through the station and finding space on public transport adds stress. A taxi or pre-booked transfer is significantly easier for families with young children. Child seats are not standard in Swedish taxis but can be requested when pre-booking a transfer.

Taxis line up at clearly marked ranks outside each terminal's arrivals exit. Follow the "Taxi" signs. Pre-booked transfer drivers typically meet you in the arrivals hall holding a name sign. The meeting point is usually near the exit doors of your arrival terminal. For Terminal 5 (most international flights), drivers wait in the arrivals hall after customs. Uber and rideshare pickups are at designated spots outside the terminal. Do not accept rides from anyone approaching you inside the terminal.

Choose the Arlanda Express if you are travelling light, want speed, and your destination is near Stockholm Central Station. Youth, child and pensioner fares are roughly half the adult one, and children travel free with an adult ticket — worth checking before you write it off as expensive.

Choose Flygbussarna if you want to save money and do not mind a longer ride. Good for solo travellers and couples with manageable luggage.

Choose a taxi if you want door-to-door service without pre-planning. Use a company with a Swedavia agreement, ask for the fixed price up front, and check it is entered in the meter before you set off.

Choose a pre-booked transfer if you have a large group, heavy luggage, children, need a child seat, or are heading somewhere outside central Stockholm. The fixed price and meet-and-greet service remove uncertainty.
