Getting from Tallinn Airport with kids and family

Last updated: February 2026

Tallinn Airport is one of the most family-friendly airports in the region. It is modern, compact, and only 4 km from the city center. Here is what families need to know.

The terminal experience

The terminal is single-level where it matters, with elevators available where there are level changes. Luggage trolleys are available at baggage claim. Restrooms are clean and accessible. There is a small play area for children, though you may want to head straight out given how close the city is.

The walk from baggage claim to the exit is short. From the exit to the taxi rank or tram stop is equally brief. The entire airport can be navigated with a stroller without difficulty.

Car seats in Estonia

Estonia legally requires child car seats. This is enforced more consistently than in many other countries. Standard taxis at the rank are unlikely to carry car seats. If your child needs one, you have two practical options.

First, bring your own travel car seat. Given the short ride, even a lightweight portable seat works well. Second, request a car seat when booking a transfer. Specify your child's age and weight at the time of booking so the correct seat is provided.

For older children who can use a standard seatbelt with a booster, some transfer services can provide boosters. Again, request this in advance.

Vehicle sizing

A standard taxi or Bolt can handle a family of four with moderate luggage. If you have a stroller, two large suitcases, and carry-on bags, a standard sedan may be tight. The trunk space in many European taxis is sufficient but not generous.

For families with more than two children or heavy luggage loads, booking a minivan transfer is the simplest solution. This avoids the uncertainty of whether the next available taxi at the rank has enough space.

The tram with kids

Tram Line 4 is a valid option for families traveling light. It is clean, modern, and runs frequently. However, managing suitcases, a stroller, and children on public transport is never as easy as getting into a private vehicle. If you have significant luggage, a taxi or transfer is less stressful.

Practical tips

  • Request a car seat at the time of booking a transfer, not on arrival day
  • The ride is only 10-15 minutes, so even tired or restless children cope well
  • Card payment works in taxis, on trams, and throughout Estonia
  • The Old Town has cobblestone streets, so keep that in mind for stroller navigation at your destination
  • Winter arrivals: Estonian winters are cold, so dress children warmly since the walk from terminal to vehicle, though short, is outdoors
Tallinn makes the airport-to-hotel transition easy for families. The distance is minimal, the infrastructure is modern, and with a car seat arranged in advance, you are sorted.
