Kuressaare Airport (URE) sits about 3 km from the center of Kuressaare, the main town on Estonia's largest island, Saaremaa. That translates to a 5-7 minute drive. The airport is small — genuinely small — so the process from landing to leaving the building rarely takes more than 10 minutes. A pre-booked transfer is the most reliable option, particularly if you are arriving on a later flight or traveling with family. Taxis exist but availability fluctuates, and there is no regular public bus connecting the airport to town.

URE handles a limited number of daily flights, mostly from Tallinn via Nordica or regional carriers. The terminal is a single building with one baggage area. You collect your luggage, walk through the exit, and you are outside within minutes. There is no customs process for domestic Estonian flights. If arriving from another EU country, the formalities are minimal.

Outside the terminal, the pickup area is directly in front of the exit. There is no multi-level parking structure or complex signage to navigate. If someone is picking you up, they will be standing right there.

Taxi: There may be a taxi or two waiting outside, but this is not guaranteed, especially for evening flights or during quieter months. Kuressaare does not have a large taxi fleet. You can try calling a local taxi company, but wait times vary.

Rental car: A few rental agencies operate at or near the airport. If you plan to explore Saaremaa island beyond Kuressaare, a rental car makes sense. Book ahead — availability on the island is limited.

Walking: Technically possible if you are traveling light and heading to the town center. It is a 30-40 minute walk along a straight road. Not ideal with luggage or children.

Public transport: There is no dedicated airport bus. Some regional bus routes pass nearby, but schedules do not align reliably with flight arrivals.

The short distance keeps costs low by European standards. A taxi from the airport to Kuressaare center typically costs between 5-10 EUR. A pre-booked private transfer runs slightly higher, generally 15-25 EUR, but includes the certainty of someone actually being there when you land. If you are heading to a resort or spa hotel outside the town center, expect 15-35 EUR depending on distance. Prices are stable year-round, though summer months (June-August) see the most visitor traffic on the island.

Kuressaare Airport does not handle many late-night flights, but when they occur — due to delays or seasonal charter schedules — you should not count on finding a taxi outside. The town is quiet after dark and the taxi fleet is minimal. A pre-booked transfer is the practical solution for any arrival after 8 PM. Your driver will track your flight and adjust for delays.

Saaremaa attracts families, especially during summer. If you are traveling with children and the usual collection of car seats, strollers, and oversized bags, a pre-booked transfer lets you request appropriate vehicle size and child seats in advance.
