What drives the cost
Distance is the primary factor. The southern resort strip is close (17-25 km). Puerto de la Cruz and Santa Cruz in the north are 60-95 km away via motorway.
Direction matters at Tenerife. The southern resorts (Los Cristianos, Playa Americas, Costa Adeje) are nearby and cheap to reach. The north is a full motorway journey. This is why TFS is the right airport for southern stays but TFN is better for the north.
Altitude and Teide: Going to the Teide National Park or La Orotava involves significant altitude gain (up to 2,300m). The roads wind considerably above 1,000m. Journey times are longer than distances suggest.
Group size: Splitting a taxi fare across a group of four to the southern resorts can bring the per-person cost close to the bus fare. For groups, a taxi or transfer is excellent value per person.
The value perspective
For the southern resort strip: the TITSA bus (Line 40) is hard to beat on price for Playa de las Americas and Los Cristianos if you are arriving during the day with manageable luggage — check titsa.com for the current fare.
For Puerto de la Cruz and the north: no cheap option exists. A taxi or private transfer is necessary, and the fare will be substantial given the 90+ km distance. Get a quote or check the meter before you commit.
