Getting from Argyle International Airport to Kingstown: What to Expect

Argyle International Airport (SVD) is located on the eastern coast of Saint Vincent, about 12 km from Kingstown. The drive takes approximately 30-40 minutes along the Windward Highway. A taxi costs around EC$ 60-80 (USD 22-30). There is no airport bus, train, or shuttle service. Your options are a taxi or a pre-booked private transfer.

Argyle is a modern airport that opened in 2017, replacing the old E.T. Joshua Airport. It handles international flights from Caribbean hubs and a few longer-haul connections. The terminal is clean, organized, and not overwhelming. After clearing immigration and collecting your bags, you exit into a small arrivals area. The airport is not in a town — it sits on the eastern coast with not much around it. Outside, you will find a taxi area and drivers holding signs. There are no shops or restaurants worth mentioning outside the terminal.

Pre-booked private transfer: A driver is assigned to your flight and waits at arrivals. The price is confirmed before you travel. This is particularly useful because Argyle is isolated — if no taxis happen to be waiting (possible with smaller flights), a pre-booked driver is your safety net.

Minibus (van): Local minibuses run along the main roads but are not timed to flights, do not serve the airport directly, and are impractical with luggage. Not a realistic option for arriving passengers.

Rental car: A few rental agencies operate at the airport. You will need a local temporary driving permit (available at the airport or police station for about EC$ 65). Driving is on the left side. Roads are narrow and mountainous.

Taxis at Argyle are a mix of sedans and SUVs. If you have a family of four with full luggage, confirm with the driver that everything fits before loading up. The terminal is small and the exit leads to a straightforward outdoor area where all ground transport is visible. Taxis line up in the parking area directly ahead. You will not have trouble finding either option — there is only one exit and one parking area.

Choose a taxi if: you are arriving during the day when taxis are available, you are comfortable negotiating a fare, and you are traveling with manageable luggage.

Consider a rental car if: you plan to explore Saint Vincent beyond Kingstown during your stay. The island is small but roads are winding and scenic.
