Salvador Airport handles flights until around midnight, with the last domestic arrivals typically landing between 11 PM and midnight. International connections from Sao Paulo and Brasilia occasionally arrive later. If your flight gets in after 10 PM, here is what to expect.
What is open
The terminal stays open for arriving passengers. A few shops and the cafe close by 10 PM, so do not count on buying food or SIM cards late at night. ATMs are available 24 hours. The arrivals hall is lit and staffed by airport security, so the terminal itself feels safe even late.
Transport options after 10 PM
Official taxis operate 24 hours from the airport. The taxi desk may close, but drivers will still be available at the stand outside arrivals. If the desk is closed, negotiate based on the posted rates or agree on a price before getting in.
Uber and 99 are available late at night but with reduced driver availability. Wait times increase from the usual 3-5 minutes to 10-20 minutes after 11 PM. Surge pricing is uncommon late at night (there is no competing demand), so fares are often lower than daytime.
Pre-booked transfers are the most reliable option for late arrivals. Your driver is committed to your specific flight and will be waiting regardless of delays or the hour. This removes the uncertainty of finding transport when options are limited.
The airport bus does not run late at night. The last bus typically departs around 9-10 PM.
The drive at night
Salvador's roads are dramatically faster after 10 PM. The drive to Pelourinho or Barra that takes 40-50 minutes during the day drops to 20-25 minutes at night with empty roads. The highway from the airport is well-lit for the first half of the journey.
Safety considerations
Salvador has a higher crime rate than some Brazilian cities, and empty streets late at night warrant sensible precautions. Use official transport only. Do not accept rides from people approaching you inside the terminal. Keep valuables out of sight in the car. Have your hotel address ready to show the driver rather than searching on your phone on the curb.
If your hotel is in Pelourinho, note that the historic center can be quiet and poorly lit late at night. Ask your driver to drop you as close to your hotel entrance as possible.
Our recommendation
For late arrivals at SSA, book a transfer in advance. The peace of mind of having a confirmed driver waiting for you is worth the modest premium over Uber, especially after a long travel day.
