Salvador is a fantastic family destination with beaches, culture, and warm weather year-round. Getting from the airport to your hotel with children just takes a bit of planning.
At the airport
SSA has been renovated in recent years and is reasonably comfortable. Restrooms are available in both terminals. There are a few cafes and shops in the arrivals area for snacks and drinks. The terminal is air-conditioned, which matters in Salvador's tropical heat. Immigration for international arrivals can take 20-40 minutes during peak times — have water and snacks ready for young children.
Child seats
Brazilian law requires children under 10 to use appropriate car seats or booster seats. Enforcement has increased in cities like Salvador, and police checkpoints on the highway from the airport do check. Uber and 99 drivers almost never carry child seats. Official airport taxis do not have them either.
If you need a child seat, your most reliable options are: bring a travel car seat from home, or book a private transfer and request a seat at the time of booking. Reputable transfer companies in Salvador can provide child seats when asked in advance. Confirm this before your trip, not at the airport.
The ride with kids
The drive from SSA to Pelourinho or Barra takes 30-50 minutes depending on traffic. The highway is a proper divided road but traffic can be heavy during rush hours. Air conditioning is standard in all taxis and transfer vehicles. If your children get carsick, the highway section is straight and smooth, but city streets closer to the center can be winding.
Luggage for families
Families heading to Salvador's beaches often have extra gear — boogie boards, snorkeling equipment, inflatable toys. A standard sedan handles 2-3 suitcases plus a pushchair. For families with more luggage, request an SUV or minivan at booking. The airport bus is not practical for families with significant luggage.
Best transport option for families
A pre-booked transfer with child seats requested in advance is the most stress-free option. The driver meets you in arrivals, helps with luggage, and the vehicle is ready for your family's needs. Uber is fine for families with older children who do not need car seats, but the walk to the parking lot pickup area with luggage and tired kids is not ideal.
Destinations popular with families
Praia do Forte (50-70 min from airport) has calm beaches and sea turtle projects. Itapua (10-15 min) is the closest beach area. Barra has a mix of beach and city. Costa do Sauipe resorts (80-100 min) offer all-inclusive family packages. For any destination beyond the city, booking transport in advance is strongly recommended.
