Taxi vs. Private Transfer at Seychelles International Airport (SEZ)

Both taxis and private transfers are viable at SEZ. The Seychelles taxi system is more organized than many island destinations, with published rate cards and generally professional drivers. But there are situations where a pre-booked transfer is the clearly better option.

Taking a taxi at SEZ

Taxis queue outside the arrivals terminal. Drivers are licensed, and fares follow a government rate card organized by destination zone. You should not need to negotiate — the rate card exists to prevent that. However, it helps to know the expected fare for your destination before approaching the rank.

Vehicles are typically well-maintained sedans or small SUVs. Drivers know the island well and speak English and Creole, with many also speaking French. The experience is generally pleasant.

The limitation is availability. The Seychelles has a finite number of taxis, and when two or three wide-body aircraft arrive within the same hour — common with Gulf carrier schedules — demand temporarily exceeds supply. You may wait 10-20 minutes for a taxi to return from a drop-off. During off-peak times, there is usually no wait.

Booking a private transfer

A private transfer means a driver and vehicle are assigned to your flight. They wait at arrivals regardless of how many other flights are landing. You get a specific vehicle type (important if you have luggage requirements), and the price is confirmed at booking.

Transfer prices are slightly higher than taxi fares — typically 10-20 USD more depending on the destination. For a couple heading to Beau Vallon, the difference might be 50 USD versus 40 USD. For a family needing a minivan to the south coast, it might be 90 USD versus 70 USD.

The availability question

This is the key differentiator at SEZ. During the day, when flights are spaced apart, taxis are fine. But evening arrivals — particularly the cluster of Gulf flights between 9 PM and midnight — create a genuine taxi shortage. If you arrive at 11 PM on the same Emirates flight as 300 other passengers, a taxi queue is almost certain.

A pre-booked transfer sidesteps this entirely. Your driver is there before you exit customs.

Road conditions on Mahe

Mahe's roads are narrow, steep, and winding — especially to the west and south coasts. Both taxi drivers and transfer drivers navigate these daily. For the passenger, the experience is the same. The difference is not in the driving but in the logistics before you get in the car.

When a taxi is the right choice

Daytime arrivals with moderate luggage, heading to Victoria or Beau Vallon, with no children needing car seats. The taxi rank will have vehicles, the fare is fair, and you will be at your hotel quickly.

When a transfer is the right choice

Evening or night arrivals. Families with children who need a car seat. Groups of more than four who need a minivan. Travelers heading to remote resorts in southern Mahe. Anyone who simply wants the certainty of a guaranteed ride after a 10-hour flight from Europe or the Gulf.

Summary

The Seychelles taxi system works well within its capacity limits. A pre-booked transfer works well regardless of those limits. The price difference is small enough that it comes down to personal preference during the day, and clearly favors pre-booking at night.
