Oslo Gardermoen Airport: Taxi or Private Transfer?

For most travelers at Oslo Airport, the train is the default choice. But when the train does not suit your situation, the decision comes down to taxi or private transfer.

How Taxis Work at OSL

The taxi rank is outside the arrivals exit. Multiple companies operate at the airport. Norwegian taxis are well-regulated, clean, and drivers speak English. Fares to Oslo city centre run 800-1,200 NOK depending on the company and traffic. Some companies offer a fixed airport fare, so ask before getting in. Be aware that Norway has had issues with unlicensed operators in the past, so stick to marked taxis at the official rank.

How Private Transfers Work

You book in advance, provide your flight details, and a driver meets you at arrivals with a name board. The price is fixed at booking. Vehicles range from standard sedans to larger minivans and executive cars. The driver monitors your flight for delays. Door-to-door service means you go directly to your hotel, office, or cruise terminal.

The Price Comparison

To Oslo city centre: taxi 800-1,200 NOK, private transfer 900-1,400 NOK. The difference is small, and the transfer price is fixed while the taxi price depends on traffic and route. To Drammen: taxi 1,400-1,800 NOK, private transfer 1,500-2,000 NOK. To Lillehammer: taxi 2,500-3,500 NOK, private transfer 2,800-3,800 NOK. On longer routes, the fixed pricing of a transfer becomes more valuable because a metered taxi on a congested E6 motorway can run higher than expected.

The Real Differences

A taxi is immediately available during normal hours. No advance planning needed. You walk out, join the queue, and go. A private transfer requires advance booking but guarantees a specific vehicle, driver, and price. For someone arriving at a busy airport and heading straight to a central hotel, the taxi is fine. For someone arriving late, needing a child seat, carrying ski equipment, or heading to a specific address outside Oslo, the transfer provides more certainty.

Child Seats

Norwegian law requires child restraints in all vehicles, including taxis. In practice, not all taxis at the rank will have the right seat for your child. Some taxi companies can arrange one if you call ahead, but availability is not guaranteed. Private transfer services allow you to specify exact child seat requirements when booking.

The Train Factor

Honestly, the Vy train at 115 NOK or Flytoget at 230 NOK is the best option for most solo travelers and couples heading to central Oslo. Taxis and transfers make more sense when you need door-to-door service, are traveling as a group (where the per-person cost competes with train tickets), have bulky luggage, or are heading somewhere the train does not go.
