OSL - Oslo

What It Actually Costs to Get from Oslo Airport to Your Hotel

Norway is expensive, and transport from the airport is no exception. But there are genuine value options if you know what to look for.

Oslo City Centre (50 km, 19-50 minutes)

The Vy regional train costs about 115 NOK per person and takes 23-28 minutes. This is the best value option. The Flytoget express train costs about 230 NOK and takes 19-22 minutes. The Flybussen bus costs 200-230 NOK and takes 45-60 minutes. A taxi runs 800-1,200 NOK. A private transfer costs 900-1,400 NOK for the vehicle.

Breaking Down the Train Options

The Vy train at 115 NOK is essentially half the price of the Flytoget at 230 NOK, and only 5-8 minutes slower. For a solo traveler or couple, the Vy train is the clear value choice. The Flytoget is worth it if you are catching a tight connection or simply value the extra speed and frequency. Both trains arrive at Oslo Central Station.

When Taxis and Transfers Make Financial Sense

For a solo traveler, the train is always cheaper than a taxi. But for groups, the math changes. A private transfer at 1,200 NOK split between four people is 300 NOK each, only slightly more than the Flytoget ticket but with door-to-door service and no need to take a second taxi from Oslo S to your hotel. If your hotel is not walking distance from Oslo Central Station, the taxi from Oslo S can add 150-250 NOK, which closes the gap further.

Destinations Beyond Oslo

Drammen (70 km): Flytoget direct, about 230 NOK. Taxi 1,400-1,800 NOK. Private transfer 1,500-2,000 NOK. Lillehammer (140 km): Vy train about 400-500 NOK (2 hours). Taxi 2,500-3,500 NOK. Private transfer 2,800-3,800 NOK. Fredrikstad (130 km): Bus or train via Oslo. Taxi 2,200-3,000 NOK.

Hidden Costs

Flytoget tickets bought on the train cost more than those purchased in advance online or from machines. Some taxis quote a fixed price for the airport route, so ask before you get in. Toll roads between the airport and Oslo add about 80-120 NOK to taxi fares and are usually included in private transfer quotes. Tipping is not expected in Norway but rounding up is appreciated.

Best Value Summary

Solo traveler: Vy train at 115 NOK, hard to beat. Couple: Vy train at 230 NOK total, or Flytoget at 460 NOK if time matters. Family of four: Private transfer at 900-1,400 NOK total, versus Flytoget at 920 NOK (adults and children) plus a taxi from Oslo S. Group of four heading outside central Oslo: private transfer almost always makes sense when you factor in the secondary taxi from the train station to your actual destination.
