Wattay International Airport (VTE) Transfer Guide for Vientiane

Wattay International Airport is about 4 km west of central Vientiane. A pre-booked transfer to the city center costs around $8-15 USD. Taxis charge roughly 60,000-80,000 LAK (about $6-8 USD) for the same trip. The ride takes 10-20 minutes depending on traffic and your exact destination. Tuk-tuks are cheaper but less comfortable with luggage. This is one of the easier airport-to-city transfers in Southeast Asia.

Wattay has a small international terminal that was renovated in recent years. After landing, you go through immigration, which can take 15-40 minutes depending on the number of arriving flights and whether you need a visa on arrival. Visa on arrival is available for many nationalities but requires waiting in a separate queue. Once through, you collect your luggage from one of the carousels and walk through customs. The arrivals hall has a few currency exchange counters and SIM card vendors. Outside, you will find a taxi counter, a line of vehicles, and tuk-tuk drivers looking for passengers.

Airport taxi (official counter): There is an official taxi counter inside the arrivals hall where you state your destination and pay a fixed fare. You receive a ticket and are directed to a taxi outside. This is straightforward and reasonably priced.

Tuk-tuks: Available outside the terminal. Cheaper than taxis (30,000-50,000 LAK to the center) but open-air, less comfortable, and the drivers will try to negotiate a higher fare. Fine for solo travelers with a backpack, less ideal with multiple suitcases.

Hotel shuttle: Some mid-range and upscale hotels in Vientiane offer airport pickup. Ask your hotel when booking your room.

Public transport: Essentially nonexistent for the airport route. There is no regular bus service connecting Wattay to the city center.

The official taxi counter charges fixed fares based on zones. To the city center and most hotels along the Mekong riverfront, expect 60,000-80,000 LAK ($6-8 USD). To areas further from the center, fares go up to 100,000-120,000 LAK. Pre-booked transfers range from $8-15 USD for the city center, sometimes slightly more for hotels on the outskirts. Tuk-tuks will start by asking for more than a taxi and expect you to negotiate down to 30,000-50,000 LAK. Currency matters: paying in Lao Kip gets you the best rate. Many drivers accept Thai Baht or USD but at unfavorable exchange rates.

Wattay receives international flights from Bangkok, Hanoi, Seoul, and other cities, some arriving in the late evening. After about 10 PM, the number of taxis and tuk-tuks waiting outside thins out. The official taxi counter may still operate for the last flights, but availability is not guaranteed. A pre-booked transfer is the reliable choice for late arrivals. The road into the city is quiet at night and the ride is quick, but finding transport on your own can take time when few vehicles are around.

For families, a taxi or pre-booked transfer is the practical choice. Tuk-tuks cannot comfortably carry more than two people with luggage. Taxis at Wattay are generally sedans, so if you have a large family or lots of bags, mention this when booking a transfer to ensure a larger vehicle. Child seats are not standard in Laos; if you need one, request it in advance through a private transfer service. The ride into town is short and the roads are decent, so the transfer itself is low stress.

For pre-booked transfers, your driver will be in the arrivals hall, typically near the exit doors, holding a sign with your name. The terminal is small enough that spotting them is easy. If you use the official taxi counter, you pay at the counter inside and are directed to a vehicle outside. Tuk-tuk drivers will approach you as you exit the terminal. There is no confusion about where to go; the airport is compact and everything is visible from the exit.

Choose the official taxi counter if: you want a fair, fixed price without negotiation and are comfortable with a standard taxi experience. Good for couples and solo travelers.

Choose a tuk-tuk if: you are traveling light, enjoy the open-air ride, and do not mind negotiating. A quintessential Southeast Asian experience.
