OSL - Oslo

Late Night Arrivals at Oslo Gardermoen Airport: Your Options

Gardermoen handles flights well into the evening, including intercontinental arrivals that land late. Here is what actually runs after dark.

Train Services at Night

The Flytoget airport express runs until approximately midnight, with the last train departing around 00:10 on most nights. Frequency drops to every 20 minutes after 22:00 compared to every 10 minutes during the day. The Vy regional train also has late services but check the specific timetable for your arrival date, as the last departure varies. On Friday and Saturday nights, services tend to run slightly later.

The Flybussen at Night

The airport bus service to Oslo runs until approximately 01:00, making it one of the last public transport options available. The journey takes 45-60 minutes. This can be a backup if you miss the last train.

Taxis After Midnight

Taxis are available at the airport 24 hours. After the last flights, there are usually enough taxis at the rank to handle the remaining passengers. However, late-night demand can sometimes exceed supply, leading to wait times of 15-30 minutes. The fare to Oslo city centre at night is typically at the higher end of the range, around 1,000-1,300 NOK, partly because traffic is lighter (shorter trip time but minimum fare still applies) and partly because some companies apply night rates.

Pre-Booked Transfers

A private transfer booked in advance is the most predictable option for late arrivals. Your driver monitors your flight, so if it lands at 23:45 or 01:30, they are there when you walk out. The price is fixed at booking with no late-night surcharges. For a sedan to central Oslo, expect 1,000-1,500 NOK regardless of the hour.

The Airport After Hours

Oslo Gardermoen stays open around the clock. There is a rest area and some 24-hour facilities. The Park Inn hotel is connected to the terminal if you decide to overnight rather than travel to the city late. Some travelers arriving on very late flights choose to sleep at the airport hotel and take the first morning Flytoget instead.

Winter Considerations

If you arrive late during the Norwegian winter (November through March), conditions outside can be cold and dark. Roads between Gardermoen and Oslo are well maintained and snow-cleared, but the drive can take longer in heavy snowfall. A professional driver experienced with winter conditions is one of the less obvious benefits of a pre-booked transfer during this season.

Practical Advice

If your flight is scheduled to arrive before midnight, aim for the last Flytoget. It is fast, affordable, and avoids the taxi cost entirely. If there is any chance of delay pushing your arrival past midnight, book a transfer as backup. The cost of an unused transfer booking is usually refundable, while the cost of being stranded at Gardermoen at 01:00 without a plan is a cold, expensive taxi ride.
