Trabzon Airport to City: What You Actually Need to Know

Trabzon Airport (TZX) is located about 6 km east of the city center, right along the Black Sea coast. The drive into central Trabzon takes 15-20 minutes. The airport handles both domestic flights from Istanbul, Ankara, and Izmir, and a growing number of international routes, particularly from Gulf countries and Central Asia. Getting into the city is straightforward with several options available.

TZX has a modern terminal that was renovated and expanded in recent years. After landing, you follow a single corridor to baggage claim. International arrivals go through passport control first. The terminal has ATMs, a small duty-free area, and a couple of cafes.

Once you collect your bags and exit through the arrivals gate, you enter a small hall with car rental counters and a tourist information desk. Stepping outside, you will find the taxi rank to your right and the Havabus (airport shuttle) stop straight ahead. The airport sits right on the coastal road, so the drive into town follows the sea.

Taxi: Readily available at the rank outside arrivals. Taxis in Trabzon use meters. The fare to central Trabzon runs about 150-250 TRY depending on your exact destination. Drivers are generally honest with meters.

Car Rental: Several agencies have desks at the terminal. Useful if you plan to explore the Eastern Black Sea coast, Sumela Monastery, or the yayla (highland) villages. Roads can be winding and steep outside the city.

Pre-Booked Private Transfer: Your driver meets you inside arrivals with a name board. Particularly useful if heading to destinations outside the city like Uzungol, Ayder, or the Sumela area, where arranging onward transport from the city center adds complexity.

To Trabzon city center (Meydan area): 150-250 TRY by taxi, 30-40 TRY by Havabus.

To Boztepe or the hilltop areas: 200-350 TRY by taxi.

To Sumela Monastery area (Macka): approximately 500-800 TRY by taxi, about 45 minutes drive.

To Uzungol: 1,200-2,000 TRY, roughly 1.5-2 hours depending on road conditions and weather.

To Ayder Plateau: 2,000-3,500 TRY, about 3 hours drive via Rize.

Pre-booked transfers for longer distances often provide better value because the price is agreed in advance and includes waiting time if needed.

TZX handles domestic flights that can arrive as late as midnight, especially connections from Istanbul. The Havabus runs for the last flights but check the schedule if your flight is delayed. Taxis are generally available even for late arrivals, though the rank may be thinner after 11 PM.

The drive into Trabzon at night is quick because traffic disappears after 10 PM. The coastal road is well-lit for the most part. For destinations outside the city, a late-night taxi can be arranged but pre-booking is strongly recommended since finding a driver willing to go to Uzungol or Macka at midnight is not guaranteed.

Turkish domestic flights often come with generous luggage allowances, and Trabzon sees a lot of travelers with heavy bags, including diaspora visitors bringing goods. Taxis at TZX are standard sedans that handle two large suitcases. For families with more luggage, request a larger vehicle.

The Havabus accommodates luggage in the hold but can get crowded during peak summer months when tourism to the Eastern Black Sea region peaks. If you have strollers and multiple bags, the bus becomes impractical.

Child car seats are not standard in Turkish taxis. If you need one, bring your own or arrange it through a pre-booked transfer service.

Pre-booked transfer drivers wait in the arrivals hall, just past the exit doors from baggage claim. The terminal is not large, so spotting your name board is easy. If you do not see the driver immediately, step outside and check the right side of the terminal where drivers sometimes wait if the indoor area is too crowded.

For Havabus, walk straight out of the terminal and the stop is clearly visible. For taxis, turn right after exiting.

Choose a taxi if: You want door-to-door service to your hotel in Trabzon, have moderate luggage, and are arriving during normal hours.

Choose a pre-booked transfer if: You are heading to Sumela, Uzungol, Ayder, or any destination outside central Trabzon. Also the best choice for late-night arrivals, families with children, or large groups.

Choose a rental car if: You plan to independently explore the Black Sea coast, highland plateaus, or mountain villages over several days. Be prepared for steep, winding roads.
