King Shaka International Airport (DUR) – Complete Arrival and Transfer Guide

King Shaka International Airport is located 35 km north of Durban city center along the N2 highway. There is no rail link. A metered taxi costs approximately R450–650 (25–35 EUR) to the city center, taking 30–45 minutes. Private transfers run 35–55 EUR with fixed pricing and meet-and-greet service. Uber operates reliably at DUR and costs R300–500 (16–27 EUR). There is a limited shuttle bus service but it is slow and infrequent. Most travelers choose Uber or a pre-booked transfer.

King Shaka is a modern, single-terminal airport that opened in 2010 for the FIFA World Cup. It is well-designed and efficient. For domestic arrivals (the majority of traffic), you proceed directly to baggage claim — no immigration process. International arrivals pass through immigration, which is typically quick for most nationalities, though it can slow during peak periods when multiple international flights arrive together.

The terminal is bright and spacious. After baggage reclaim, you exit into an arrivals hall with car rental desks, a few shops, currency exchange counters, and ATMs. The ground transportation area is directly outside the doors.

One thing to note: King Shaka feels more spread out than older South African airports. The walk from the gate to arrivals can take 10 minutes. Trolleys are available at baggage claim.

Uber is the most popular choice among locals and visitors. The app works well at DUR, with a dedicated pickup zone. Pricing is transparent and significantly cheaper than metered taxis. Wait times are usually 5–10 minutes.

Metered taxis are available at the dedicated taxi rank outside arrivals. They are regulated and have meters, but fares are notably higher than Uber. The vehicles are generally in good condition. Agree that the meter will be used before departure.

Private transfers offer the highest level of service. The driver meets you inside arrivals with a name sign, assists with luggage, and drives you directly to your destination. Prices are fixed at booking time. This option is particularly popular with international visitors unfamiliar with Durban.

Shuttle buses operated by various companies provide shared rides to the city, but schedules are irregular and you may wait for the vehicle to fill. Not recommended unless budget is the only consideration.

Rental cars are available from major agencies in the arrivals hall. The N2 highway to Durban is a good road, and having a car is useful for exploring the KwaZulu-Natal coast.

Note that Umhlanga Rocks is much closer to the airport than central Durban — only about 15 km. If your accommodation is in Umhlanga, the transfer is quick and affordable.

King Shaka handles domestic flights that land as late as 22:00–23:00, with occasional international arrivals later. The airport stays open for these flights. After 21:00, shuttle services stop and the taxi rank thins out. Uber remains available but driver supply drops — expect wait times of 10–20 minutes after 22:00.

The N2 highway to Durban is well-maintained and adequately lit on the main stretch. However, it is generally recommended to avoid stopping on quieter sections at night. Standard Uber vehicles handle two passengers with luggage comfortably. Larger families should request an Uber XL or book a private transfer minivan. South African law requires appropriate child restraints for children — bring your own as taxis and Uber do not provide them. Private transfers can arrange car seats if requested during booking.

Private transfers — Drivers wait in the arrivals hall, often near the exit doors, holding a name sign. The terminal is not crowded enough to make this difficult — you will find your driver quickly.

Rental cars — Desks are in the arrivals hall. The car park is a short walk via a covered walkway.

Take a metered taxi if: you prefer not to use apps, want to pay cash, or Uber surge pricing is active.

Book a private transfer if: you are a first-time visitor to South Africa, traveling with family, arriving late at night, or want guaranteed meet-and-greet service.

Rent a car if: you plan to explore KwaZulu-Natal — the Dolphin Coast, Hluhluwe-Imfolozi, or the Drakensberg mountains. Durban itself is manageable by car.

Consider Umhlanga as a base if your plans allow — it is closer to the airport, has excellent beaches and restaurants, and avoids the longer drive to central Durban.
