S-Bahn — the smart money
The airport is in MVV zone 5 and the city is zone M, so a ticket has to cover zones M-5. Since MVV's fare change on 1 January 2026, a single trip in M-5 costs €15.10. The S1 and S8 run alternately, giving a train every 10 minutes between the airport and the city, and the trip to the Hauptbahnhof takes about 40 minutes. The S8 runs around the clock (every 40 minutes between roughly 1 and 4 a.m.); the S1 runs every 20 minutes from about 3 a.m. to midnight (nonstop at weekends and on holidays, per the airport).
In practice many arrivals will prefer the Airport-City-Day-Ticket, which covers the airport and the whole city area (zones M-5) until 6 a.m. the next day: €17.50 in the Single version (one adult plus up to three children aged 6-14) or €32.60 in the Group version for 2-5 people, where two children aged 6-14 count as one adult. It covers unlimited travel on Munich's S-Bahn, U-Bahn, trams and buses. For only €2.40 more than the €15.10 single, you get the rest of the day on the whole network, so it is worth considering if you are arriving in the morning.
For groups, the €32.60 group version works out at about €6.52 each for five people (€32.60 divided by five), airport journey plus all-day travel.

Taxi fare details
Munich taxis are metered on the city tariff (Taxitarifordnung): a 5.90 EUR minimum fare, 2.70 EUR per km up to 7 km and 2.50 EUR per km beyond that, plus 39.00 EUR per hour of waiting time.
Munich also has published fixed fares for the direct route: 96 EUR between the airport and the Hauptbahnhof, in either direction, and 90 EUR between the airport and the Messe/ICM. The ordinance applies them at any time and states that the surcharges in § 3 apply in addition (the conditions for those surcharges are in the ordinance, so check it for your vehicle and party); if you ask for a different route the meter applies. The ordinance was last amended on 19 May 2026, so check the current tariff before you travel.

For 2-5 people, the group Airport-City-Day-Ticket is good value, and it keeps working all day after you drop your bags. A taxi only closes the gap at 4-5 people with luggage, and it takes you to one address rather than the whole network.
Cost to destinations beyond Munich
Augsburg, Nuremberg, Salzburg, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Innsbruck and Neuschwanstein Castle are long-distance runs outside the city taxi tariff. A pre-booked transfer is a fixed price quoted at booking; ask for a quote for your specific journey. We are not printing estimates for these.

The bus (€12.50 online, €13.50 from the driver) makes sense if you want a direct, seated run to the Hauptbahnhof in the daytime.
