The Maldives does not have taxis waiting outside the airport. Velana International Airport is on its own island, so the comparison here is between the public ferry and a private speedboat transfer to Male city. For resort transfers, the comparison is between the resort-arranged boat and a private arrangement.
Public Ferry
The government-operated ferry between the airport and Male city is affordable and functional. It costs about $2 per person, runs every 10-15 minutes during the day, and the crossing takes about 10 minutes. The boats are basic but seaworthy. You board at the ferry terminal, a short walk from the airport arrivals area.
The limitations are real. The ferry stops running around 11:30 PM. It can be crowded when multiple flights arrive simultaneously. There is no luggage assistance. And once you arrive at the Male ferry terminal, you still need to find your way to your hotel on foot or by local taxi.
Private Speedboat Transfer
A private speedboat costs $25-50 for the boat (not per person) and can be arranged for any time, including late at night. The boat picks you up from the airport jetty and drops you at a location closer to your hotel. Some services include a vehicle on the Male side for door-to-door coverage at $40-80 total.
The advantages are clear: no waiting, no crowds, luggage handled, and available 24 hours. For families or groups of three or more, the per-person cost is comparable to or cheaper than the ferry.
For Resort Transfers
If you are heading to a resort, this choice is largely made for you. Most resorts have their own transfer arrangements using their branded speedboats or contracted seaplanes. Arranging your own independent speedboat to a resort island is theoretically possible but rarely practical or cheaper. Stick with whatever your resort offers.
When the Ferry Wins
The ferry makes sense for solo travelers or couples heading to Male city during daytime hours. If you are backpacking the Maldives on a budget, staying in local island guesthouses, and traveling light, the ferry is the obvious choice. It is safe, regular, and costs almost nothing.
When a Private Transfer Wins
Private transfers win when you arrive late at night, have significant luggage, are traveling with children, or simply want the smoothest possible start to your trip. After a long international flight, the difference between navigating a crowded ferry terminal with bags and stepping onto a dedicated boat is significant.
Practical Advice
If your flight arrives during the day and you are going to Male city with a backpack, take the ferry. If you are arriving after 10 PM, traveling with a family, or carrying more than one bag per person, book a private speedboat. The cost difference is small and the convenience difference is large.
