GEO - Georgetown

Family Transfers from Cheddi Jagan Airport

The 41 km ride from Cheddi Jagan International Airport to Georgetown is one of the longer airport transfers families will encounter. With children, a bit of planning turns what could be a stressful start into a smooth one.

The drive with kids

The road to Georgetown is a two-lane highway for much of the route. It takes 45 minutes to 1.5 hours. For children, that is a meaningful amount of time in a car after a flight. Bring entertainment, snacks, and water. There are limited stops along the way — no convenient rest areas or fast food joints between the airport and the city.

If your child gets car sick, sit them by a window and avoid heavy food before the drive. The road has some curves and uneven sections.

Child car seats

Car seats are not standard in Guyanese taxis or transfer vehicles. The country does not have strict child seat regulations that are enforced in practice. If you want your child in a proper seat, bring a portable travel car seat with you. Requesting one from a transfer provider is worth trying, but do not expect it to be available — confirm multiple times if the provider says yes.

For very young children (under 2), a car seat or at minimum a good infant carrier that can be secured is important given the length of the drive.

Vehicle choice

A standard sedan works for a couple with one child and moderate luggage. Beyond that, you need more space. Two children, a stroller, and family luggage will not fit comfortably in most sedans available at GEO. Book a minivan or SUV through a transfer service, or ask your hotel to send an appropriately sized vehicle.

Do not assume the taxi waiting at the terminal can handle your family's needs. A pre-booked transfer where you have specified "family of four, two large suitcases, one stroller" ensures the right vehicle arrives.

At the airport

GEO is a single-terminal airport. After the sometimes long immigration and luggage wait (budget an hour from landing to exit), you enter a small arrivals area. There are basic restrooms available. If you need to change a diaper or let children use the bathroom, do it before heading to the car — the drive is long and options are scarce along the way.

There is a small selection of drinks and snacks in the terminal. Stock up if you did not bring enough for the ride.

Timing matters

If possible, choose a daytime flight. The ride to Georgetown is more pleasant in daylight, children can see the scenery (river views, villages, green countryside), and if anything goes wrong with your transport, you have more options during the day. A nighttime arrival with tired children and a long dark drive is manageable but far from ideal.

The bottom line

Book a transfer in advance with the right vehicle size. Bring your own car seat if needed. Pack snacks and entertainment for the drive. Handle bathroom stops at the airport. These small preparations make a genuine difference when your child is asking "are we there yet" for the 41st kilometer.
