Getting from Gdansk Airport with kids and family

Last updated: April 2026

Gdansk is a great family destination — beautiful Old Town, beaches in Sopot, and the nearby Hel Peninsula. Getting from the airport is straightforward with kids.

Child seat situation in Poland

Polish law requires child seats for children under 150 cm. At GDN:

  • Taxis: Do not carry child seats. Taxis have a legal exemption.
  • Bolt/Uber: Same — no child seats.
  • SKM train/bus: No child seats needed on public transport.
  • Pre-booked transfer: Child seats available on request — safest option for young children.

Best transport by family situation

SituationBest optionCostWhy
Family with small kids (under 4)Transfer with child seat€18-25Safety + door-to-door
Family with older kids (5+)Taxi or Bolt60-80 PLN (€13-18)Quick and affordable

Family going to SopotTransfer or train€22-32 or ~5 PLN eachDepends on luggage
Large family (5+)Van transfer€25-35Space for everyone

The train with kids

The SKM train is family-friendly:

  • Short ride (25-30 minutes)
  • Modern trains with space for strollers
  • Incredibly cheap (3.80 PLN per adult, kids under 4 free)
  • The station is a 5-10 minute covered walk from the terminal

The downsides: The walk to the station with luggage and kids is the main hassle. And from Gdańsk Główny station to your hotel, you'll walk or take a short taxi. For families with strollers and heavy bags, the door-to-door option (taxi/transfer) is worth considering.

Going to Sopot or Gdynia with kids

The Tri-City coast is a popular family destination. From GDN:

To Sopot (beaches, pier, crooked house):

  • Train: 30-35 min, ~5 PLN each
  • Transfer: €22-32, 25-30 min by car
  • Sopot's beach is wide and sandy — great for kids

To Gdynia (aquarium, harbor):

  • Train: 40-45 min, ~6 PLN each
  • Transfer: €30-42, 30-35 min by car
  • Gdynia Aquarium is a top family attraction

Practical tips for families

  • GDN is a modern airport — stroller-accessible, baby changing in restrooms, compact and easy to navigate.
  • Polish złoty (PLN) is needed for small purchases. ATMs in the arrivals hall offer better rates than exchange offices.
  • Summer in Gdansk (July-August) is pleasant (20-25°C) — not too hot for kids unlike Mediterranean destinations.
  • The Old Town is largely pedestrianized — safe and easy for kids to explore.
  • Amber shops are everywhere in Gdansk. They're not interesting to kids, but the Amber Museum might be.
  • The beach at Sopot is about 15 km from the airport — many families head straight there.
