Faro airport handles late arrivals, especially during the busy summer months when charter flights from northern Europe land well into the evening.
What to expect after 10 PM
The terminal stays open for arriving passengers, but the atmosphere quiets down rapidly. Car rental desks may close, though some keep extended summer hours. The arrivals hall empties between flight waves. ATMs and vending machines remain available, but shops and cafes close.
Transport after dark
Taxis continue to operate from the rank outside arrivals. However, after the last cluster of flights, the number of available taxis drops. If your flight is the last one of the night and 200 passengers all want taxis, you may wait 20-30 minutes.
Public buses to Faro city center stop running around 10-11 PM depending on the season. Regional buses to other Algarve towns stop earlier. After these cutoffs, buses are not an option.
Uber and Bolt may have drivers available until late evening, but past midnight the pool of available drivers shrinks significantly in the Algarve region.
Pre-booked transfers are the most dependable option for late arrivals. The driver monitors your flight and adjusts to delays, so even if you land at midnight instead of 11 PM, someone is there.
The drive at night
The A22 motorway connecting the Algarve coast is well-maintained and well-lit at major junctions. Driving at night is straightforward and faster than during the day due to no traffic. Most destinations along the coast are 20-60 minutes from the airport. The roads leading from the motorway to specific resorts and villas can be narrow and poorly signed in the dark, which is where having a driver who knows the area helps.
Is it safe?
The Algarve is generally very safe, including at night. The main practical concern is not safety but availability. If you arrive after 11 PM without transport arranged, you will probably still find a taxi, but it may take longer and cost slightly more if surge pricing applies to ride-hailing apps.
Recommendation
For flights arriving after 9 PM, pre-book your transport. It costs the same as a taxi, removes the uncertainty of availability, and means you go straight from the terminal to a waiting car. After a long flight, that simplicity matters more than you think.
