Erbil Airport with Kids — What Families Need to Know

Last updated: March 2026

Erbil International Airport is small and easy to navigate, which is good news for families. The challenge is not the airport itself — it is getting from the airport to your accommodation safely with children.

The car seat situation

This is the most important thing for families to understand: child car seats are not used in regular Erbil taxis. Road safety culture in the Kurdistan Region is different from Europe, and expecting a taxi to have a car seat is not realistic.

If your children are young enough to need car seats, you have two options:

  • Bring your own travel car seat and install it in whatever vehicle you take
  • Book a private transfer and request a car seat in advance — but confirm availability explicitly, as this is not standard

What the airport is like for families

The terminal is modern and air-conditioned. There are baby changing facilities in the restrooms and the space is manageable — you will not be walking long distances with tired children. Luggage trolleys are available at baggage reclaim.

Immigration can take 20–40 minutes, which is the hardest part with restless kids. There is no fast-track for families. The visa-on-arrival process (if applicable) adds time.

Transport options for families

| Option | Cost (EUR approx) | Car seat | Luggage space | |--------|-------------------|----------|---------------| | Taxi | 10–17 | Not available | Limited (sedan) | | Private sedan | 20–35 | On request | Good | | Private SUV/minivan | 35–50 | On request | Excellent | | Hotel shuttle | Free–15 | Rarely available | Varies |

Practical tips

  • Water and snacks: Buy these in the arrivals hall before exiting. Options outside the airport are limited until you reach the city
  • Sun and heat: Erbil can be extremely hot from May to September. If traveling in summer, have the vehicle's air conditioning running before loading children
  • Hotel selection: If traveling with kids, choose a hotel that offers airport pickup — it simplifies everything
  • Strollers: These are collected at the oversized baggage area. The walk to vehicles outside is short and flat

The recommendation

For families with children under 5, book a private transfer with a car seat request — and confirm the seat is actually available before relying on it. For families with older children, a taxi works, though a transfer is still more comfortable. The price difference of EUR 10–20 is negligible when traveling with kids.
