Arriving at Erbil Airport Late at Night

Last updated: March 2026

A significant number of flights into Erbil arrive late — many connections from Istanbul, Dubai, Amman, and Vienna land between 23:00 and 02:00. If you are on one of these flights, here is what to expect.

What the airport is like after midnight

Erbil Airport stays operational for arriving flights regardless of the hour. Immigration and baggage reclaim function normally, though staffing may be lighter. The arrivals hall remains lit and secure. Most exchange counters close by 23:00, but ATMs remain available.

Food and drink options inside the terminal are very limited after midnight. If you need water or snacks, try to buy them before exiting arrivals.

Taxi availability at night

Taxis are available after midnight, but in reduced numbers. On nights with multiple late arrivals, there may be enough drivers. On quieter nights, you could wait 15–30 minutes or longer.

The bigger issue is pricing. Without meters, late-night drivers often quote 30–50% above daytime rates. A trip that costs IQD 15,000 during the day might be quoted at IQD 25,000–35,000 (about EUR 17–23) after midnight. This is negotiable, but you are in a weaker bargaining position when you are tired and there are few alternatives.

Why a pre-booked transfer matters more at night

During the day, the difference between a taxi and a transfer is mainly about comfort and convenience. At night, it becomes about reliability and safety. A pre-booked driver:

  • Tracks your flight and adjusts for delays
  • Is waiting when you exit, regardless of the time
  • Charges the agreed price with no negotiation
  • Knows your destination and the route
  • Speaks your language (requested at booking)
The cost for a late-night transfer is typically EUR 25–40 for a sedan — only marginally more than an inflated late-night taxi fare, with far less hassle.

Safety considerations

Erbil is a safe city by regional standards, and there is no particular danger in arriving late. However, navigating an unfamiliar city after midnight with luggage is inherently less comfortable than arriving during the day. A confirmed driver eliminates the main source of stress.

Practical tips for late arrivals

  • Exchange money before counters close, or use the ATM in arrivals
  • Have your hotel address saved on your phone in both English and Arabic
  • Carry small USD bills — drivers may not have change for large notes at night
  • If your hotel offers late-night airport pickup, use it — confirm the arrangement before your flight
