Erbil International Airport is only about 6 km from the city center, making it one of the shorter and cheaper airport-to-city journeys you will encounter. The main variable is whether you take a taxi (negotiated fare) or a pre-booked transfer (fixed fare).

Understanding the currency situation
Iraq uses the Iraqi Dinar (IQD), but Erbil operates on a practical dual-currency system. US Dollars are accepted in most taxis, hotels, restaurants, and shops. The exchange rate fluctuates but is roughly IQD 1,500 = USD 1 (or approximately IQD 1,600 = EUR 1).
Small bills are important. A taxi driver may not have change for a USD 50 note. Bring USD 1, 5, and 10 bills for maximum convenience. You can also exchange money at the airport — rates are acceptable though slightly worse than in the city.
What affects the price
Taxi fares are entirely negotiated. There are no meters. The fair price to the city center is about IQD 15,000–20,000, but an uninformed tourist might be quoted IQD 30,000–40,000 initially. This is normal negotiation culture — counter-offer calmly and you will reach a fair price.
Late-night surcharges are informal but real. After midnight, expect to pay 30–50% more than daytime rates.
Private transfers are quoted in EUR or USD at booking time and do not change. They include meet-and-greet, flight monitoring, and a waiting period.
Cost per person
For a couple sharing a taxi, the per-person cost is just EUR 5–8 — extremely affordable. Even a private transfer at EUR 25 is only EUR 12.50 per person for two travelers. Transport from EBL is one of the cheapest airport transfers you will find anywhere.
