Erbil Airport to City Center — What You Actually Need to Know

Erbil International Airport (EBL) is about 6 km southeast of the city center. There is no public transport connecting the airport to the city — your options are a taxi or a pre-booked private transfer. A taxi costs roughly IQD 15,000–25,000 (about EUR 10–17), and a private transfer runs EUR 20–35 for a sedan. The drive takes 10–20 minutes depending on traffic and your exact destination.

The airport is modern and well-organized, but ground transport is entirely car-based. If this is your first time in Erbil, a pre-booked transfer with a driver who speaks your language removes a lot of friction.

EBL is a single-terminal airport that was significantly modernized in recent years. Immigration can take 20–40 minutes depending on your nationality and whether you need a visa on arrival (available for many nationalities at a cost of USD 75). The process is generally orderly but not fast.

Baggage reclaim is on the ground floor and usually takes 15–25 minutes. Once you exit through customs, you enter a spacious arrivals hall. Money exchange counters are available before the exit — rates are reasonable but not the best. ATMs dispensing Iraqi Dinars (IQD) and US Dollars (USD) are also available.

Outside the arrivals exit, you will find taxi drivers and representatives from transfer services and hotels.

There is no public bus or rail service from EBL to the city. This is not unusual for Iraqi Kurdistan — the infrastructure is car-oriented.

Taxis: Available outside arrivals. These are not metered — you negotiate the price before getting in. Drivers may or may not speak English. The negotiation itself is usually friendly, but if you are unfamiliar with local pricing, you may pay more than necessary.

Private transfers: Booked in advance, fixed price, driver meets you inside arrivals. This is the most predictable option and common among business travelers visiting Erbil.

Hotel shuttles: Many of Erbil's larger hotels (Rotana, Divan, Sheraton) offer airport pickup. Check with your hotel before booking separate transport.

Private transfer sedan: EUR 20–35 depending on the provider and vehicle quality. SUVs and minivans run EUR 35–50.

Currency note: Iraq operates on a dual-currency basis in practice. US Dollars are widely accepted, especially for larger amounts. Taxis will accept USD but may give change in IQD. Bring small USD bills or exchange some IQD at the airport for convenience.

EBL handles flights around the clock, including many arrivals from Istanbul, Dubai, and Amman that land between 23:00 and 02:00. The airport remains operational, and taxis are available — though fewer of them. Late-night taxi drivers may try to charge 30–50% more than daytime rates.

A pre-booked transfer is strongly recommended for late arrivals. The driver will track your flight and be waiting regardless of delays. Erbil is generally safe at night, but navigating an unfamiliar city after midnight is easier with a pre-arranged driver.

The airport has luggage trolleys available for free. The walk from arrivals to the taxi area is short — about 50 meters.

For families, the main concern is child car seats, which are essentially unavailable in regular taxis. Private transfer services can arrange them with advance notice, but this is not standard in the region — confirm specifically when booking.

Erbil's roads are generally good within the city, though driving styles can be aggressive by European standards. A professional driver who knows the routes is genuinely valuable.

Hotel shuttles: Hotel representatives wait inside arrivals with the hotel name displayed. They are easy to spot.

Book a transfer if: This is your first visit, you arrive late at night, you are traveling with family, or you value having a confirmed price and a driver waiting with your name. The price premium over a taxi is modest.

Check your hotel first: Many Erbil hotels include airport pickup, especially for business-class hotels. If yours does, use it — it is the easiest option of all.
