Taxi vs Private Transfer from New Chitose Airport – And Why the Train Usually Wins

Last updated: April 2026

Unlike most airports, the taxi-vs-transfer debate at New Chitose has a strong third option: the JR Rapid Airport train. For most travelers heading to Sapporo, the train is better than both.

The train is faster, cheaper, and more reliable. It loses only on door-to-door convenience — you arrive at Sapporo Station and need to take the subway or walk to your hotel.

When a taxi or transfer beats the train

  • Late-night arrivals after the last train (~10:53 PM)
  • Heavy luggage that makes train travel impractical (4+ large bags)
  • Families with small children during crowded peak seasons
  • Hotels far from Sapporo Station where the subway connection adds complexity
  • Niseko, Furano, or other non-Sapporo destinations not on the JR line
  • Mobility issues where station navigation is difficult

EnglishLimitedMore likely

Japanese taxis are exceptionally clean, well-maintained, and honest — there is no scam risk. Drivers are professional and courteous. The main downside is the cost for the 50 km trip and the fact that most drivers speak little English.

A private transfer offers a fixed price and a driver who may speak more English. For groups, it can be cheaper — a minivan for 4–6 people at JPY 15,000–20,000 is competitive with two taxis.

The Niseko exception

If you are heading to Niseko, the train is not practical. Your real options are the seasonal bus (JPY 2,500–4,000, ski season only) or a private transfer (JPY 20,000–35,000). The transfer is expensive but delivers you directly to your resort. During peak ski season, book early — Niseko transfers fill up fast.
