Cluj-Napoca has one of the better airport taxi systems in Romania, which changes the usual calculus between taxis and transfers.
The taxi kiosk system
Inside the arrivals hall, there is an automated touchscreen kiosk. You select your destination, it assigns you a licensed taxi with a specific plate number, and gives you a printed receipt with an estimated fare. You walk outside and find your car in the taxi line.
This removes the typical airport taxi problems: no aggressive drivers, no price negotiation, no unmarked cars. The fare is metered and regulated. For a ride to the city center, you pay 30-50 RON (6-10 EUR).
The system works well. Wait times are usually under 5 minutes during the day. Late at night, you may wait a bit longer.
Pre-booked private transfers
A transfer costs 15-25 EUR to the city center: roughly double the taxi fare. For that premium, you get a driver waiting specifically for you, often with a name sign at arrivals. The driver tracks your flight and adjusts for delays. The vehicle is typically a newer sedan or minivan.
When does the taxi make more sense?
- You are going to the city center or anywhere within Cluj-Napoca
- You travel light (one or two bags)
- You arrive during normal hours (roughly 6 AM to 11 PM)
- You are comfortable with a basic sedan
When does a transfer make more sense?
- You are heading outside Cluj-Napoca (Turda, Sighisoara, Sibiu)
- You need a specific vehicle type (minivan, child seat)
- You arrive very late and want zero uncertainty
- You are part of a group that needs a larger vehicle
What about Bolt and Uber?
Both work at CLJ and are slightly cheaper than taxis on average. They are a good middle ground: app-based transparency, decent vehicles, and competitive pricing. The downside is the 5-10 minute wait for the driver to arrive at the airport.
For the city center trip, Bolt or Uber is a fine alternative to the taxi kiosk, especially if you already have the app set up and a payment method linked.
Bottom line
CLJ is one of those airports where the taxi system actually works well. For a standard city center trip, the kiosk taxi or a ride-hailing app will serve you perfectly. Save the pre-booked transfer for longer distances, family travel, or very late arrivals.
