Cluj-Napoca Airport is modern, compact, and easy to navigate with a family. The short distance to the city means you will be at your hotel relatively quickly.
The terminal
CLJ's terminal is well-maintained with elevators, ramps, and accessible facilities. The baggage hall is on the ground floor and easy to reach. There is no dedicated kids' play area, but the wait is usually short enough that it does not matter. Restrooms are clean and available near arrivals.
Child seats
Taxis from the kiosk system are standard sedans. They do not carry child seats. Romanian law requires child restraints for children under a certain height, but enforcement is inconsistent and taxis are generally exempt in practice.
If you want a child seat, pre-book a transfer and specify the child's age and weight. Most transfer providers can arrange an appropriate seat. Alternatively, bring your own portable car seat or booster.
Choosing your transport
Bus with kids: Line 5 works if your children are old enough to sit still for 30-40 minutes and you are not carrying too much. Strollers fit in the luggage area, but the bus can be crowded during peak times. Not ideal with a baby and heavy bags.
Taxi with kids: Quick and cheap. The kiosk system assigns you a car in minutes. The ride is 15-25 minutes. For one or two children who can sit with a seatbelt, this is the easiest option.
Transfer with kids: Best for families with small children, car seats, strollers, and multiple bags. You get a vehicle sized for your group and can request child seats in advance.
Luggage
A family of four typically fills a standard taxi trunk. If you have more than two large suitcases plus carry-ons and a stroller, request a larger vehicle through a transfer or call two taxis. The kiosk system does not let you specify vehicle size.
Heading to Transylvania with kids
Many families use Cluj as a base for visiting the Turda Salt Mine, Sighisoara, or other Transylvanian destinations. For day trips or transfers to other cities, pre-booking is the way to go. The roads through Transylvania are scenic but can be winding, so if your children are prone to car sickness, plan accordingly with breaks.
Summary
CLJ is family-friendly as airports go. The short, cheap ride to the city means the transfer is the easy part of your trip. A taxi from the kiosk works for most families; upgrade to a pre-booked transfer if you need child seats or a bigger vehicle.
